"Here you are!" Exclaimed a somewhat middle-aged man. Out of his dark brown pickup truck as a boy, who was easily identifiable with his messy spiked brown hair. The boy held his suitcase as he simply looked up towards the sign that proudly spelled, "Little League Summer Camp" in run-down, crimson letters. He turned around, fixing his red and white goggles as he showed a face of discomfort.
"Why do I have to do this again?" He complained, with his father proudly leaning out of his truck's window.
"You need to get some fresh air this summer." He proudly exclaimed, "I don't need you to be spending your time before high school on your computer. You need to socialize." The truck began to sputter back on as the brown haired son looked at his father with even more sadness. After a while, the truck was a speck in the distance as the boy looked onwards, his eyesight swirling back and forth with the rising heat from the outside. He wiped off the beads of sweat on his brow and took a very deep breath, preparing himself for one whole summer here. Alone.
With a sigh, he pulled up the handle to his black suitcase and walked towards the registration office where he met with an older teenage girl. She had on a dark green uniform, something that seemed to be what the camp counselors. Her long pink hair made her a target of most of the boy's eyes, including the boy, but it was probably for different reasons than the others had.
"Hello there, are you lost?" She cheerfully asked, as the teenager sensed her over exaggeration.
"I think I am here to find where my cabin is?" He gave her a confused look, "I am sorry, I am new to this camp thing."
She gave him a nod and patted his back, reassuring him, "Hey, all of us are scared of new things sometimes. I can find where you are staying at." She began to look through the papers in her clipboard, "Your name please?"
"Markus Doi." He replied as another boy ran into his back, causing Markus to fall over forwards and getting the other kid's attention. Before Markus could get his barring, a storm of laughter poured over the two boys, causing the goggled boy to become slightly embarrassed and the smaller boy to look at him.
"Watch where you're going!" Markus exclaimed as the smaller black haired boy began to quickly help him up and put his hands together.
"I am very sorry! I didn't see where I was going, and I thought I was lost and- "Markus interrupted the boy before he could stress himself out.
"Calm down a little." He rubbed the back of his head, "It's alright, just watch where you are going next time."
The boys quickly overcame their small squabble as the merriment began to subside and the older girl cleared her throat. "Now that we have that settled, your name is Markus Doi, correct?" Markus quickly nodded as the black haired boy raised his hand in response.
"Can you get my name too, please? I am Kaisley William." The camp counselor got found both of their names on the same piece of paper and laughed at the coincidence.
"What do you know? You know are in the same cabin. Killing two birds with one stone, am I right?" She handed them two keys, both with "Cabin B-2" engraved on them. "You two share Cabin B-2." If you follow the signs, you will be on the right path, ok?"
The two boys nodded, and upon learning their newly found connection, traveled together to Cabin B-2, walking leisurely as Markus fiddled with his goggles, much to Kaisley's curiosity.
"I haven't seen too many people wear goggles as a fashion statement." He joked as Markus began to get a bit defensive.
"Don't mock the goggles. It's just something I always liked having on. It's a childhood habit, you know?" As they walked, they heard the murmur of a female's voice. Markus began to slightly cringe as he recognized the teenager yelling for them to slow down.
"Yo! Markus! Is that you?!" The girl cried out as the boys turned to her direction, with her slowing down and panting as she caught up with them. "I… Never knew you'd be here, Markus. And who's your friend?"
Markus put his hands into the pockets of his black shorts, secretly regretting this summer camp. "I thought I would at least have some kind of silence during my summer vacation. I guess not."
The red-headed girl growled at the insult, "Oh! I was going to give you some food, but I guess you don't deserve it." She crossed her arms around her white summer dress, letting the idea of food hit Markus like a bowling bowl.
"Wait, I didn't mean it like that, Channary, I swear." He tried to beg for forgiveness, but Channary didn't budge, soon having her sight make contact onto Kaisley.
"Who's your friend? You didn't even introduce me, how rude." She teased, causing the black haired boy to look down and blush from the attention. Markus patted Kaisley's back and looked at his female friend.
"This is Kaisley, we are in the same cabin." In response, Kaisley said his greetings and the trio began to reconnect. As they walked, the sky slowly transformed from a crisp blue to a deep purple, as the sun began to set under the tall reaching trees. The once hot weather transformed into a fairly decent cool breeze, something Channary disliked as the wind began to blow her dress, causing her to hold it down in embarrassment.
"Ugh, it's gotten really cold." She growled through her teeth, causing the other kids to look up into the sky, which was reflected with a beautiful orange sunset.
"I guess time slipped by us. I swear it was daylight a while ago." Commented Kaisley, who got up along with Markus as the intercom began to blare out.
"Attention all happy campers! I hope you enjoyed your time at Summer Camp! Dinner is ready to be served at the dining hall!" As if it was a signal, Channary's stomach began to growl with a raging temper, causing her to jump up, not caring anymore about her dress flying up.
"Well, I think I'll go grab a bite to eat! Are you guys coming with?" She asked, with the Markus looking at his suitcase.
"Eh, I'll go later. I have to unpack and call my family first. My mom is probably going crazy already." He replied, with Kaisley thinking. "Uhm, I will go with you, Channary." The small boy butted in, "I can put my stuff in my cabin later."
Channary pouted, looking at her red goggled friend with a look of suspicion, "You better not be lying and try to hide all by yourself again."
Markus sighed at her as he started walking towards his cabin, "I'll be there. Just wait for me." We continued to walk as his friends turned and walked the other direction, thinking to himself about the future at the camp. He was slightly contemplating on the things he has to do, he wasn't always good with other people, and now that he might have to work with a bunch of people didn't make him feel any better. He turned around the cabin to enter the main door when we almost walked into another boy.
This boy had shorter blond hair and wore a sleeveless blue hoodie and dark green shorts, accompanied by a shiny blue necklace. He scoffed at Markus, almost looking down at him as he was slightly taller. "Watch where ya goin'" He spat, as Markus took his words to heart.
"You didn't have to walk in front of me." He retorted, as the taller boy gave him a sharper look.
"Look, ya want an enemy already? We just started camp." Markus began to back up a little bit, preparing himself for a confrontation as the boy put his hands up, "Nah, ya, not somethin' to bleed over. Just say outta' my way next time." He walked off along the pathway as Markus looked back with an annoyed face, going into the nearby cabin, thankful he didn't have to share it with someone like that.
He proceeded to open his cabin, which seemed to be fairly empty, except with some clothes being scattered around. He decided to pick the bed farthest from the rest of the other beds, due to it being away from everyone else and it seemed to be the cleanest. He proceeded to sit down and take out his smartphone, something his dad gave him a few weeks ago. Upon turning it on, he was surprised that he had enough signal in the area and proceeded to call his mother, only to be greeted by the loud sound of toddlers.
"HI MARKUS!" yelled the sound of a young boy, causing Markus to quickly to recoil and wince as his ears cleared up from the sudden surprise. With a groan, he put the phone back onto his ear, after lowering the volume of course.
"Listen Daisuke, you don't have to yell into the phone." Markus put the phone on speaker and started to sift through his suitcase. "Put mom on the phone ok?" Suddenly, a series of electrical noises echoed out of his phone, which began to suddenly buzz out, causing him to be shocked and drop his phone onto the bed. He stared at his now dangerous phone, which fuzzed constantly. The air conditioning in the cabin began to make thudding noises as the lights outside flickered on and off randomly. Suddenly, the strange electrical surge stopped, causing his phone to restart itself, and the lights to stay on. The air conditioner began to hum silently once again as Markus simply stared at his phone. "The heck was that?" He questioned as he reached for his phone with great caution, quickly picking it up as he felt no more disturbance.
Wondering about the sudden strangeness, he took it as a once in a lifetime phenomenon and began to put it in his short's pocket, getting his belongings ready as his stomach reminded him of his dinner. "Oh right, food." He commented as he walked out of his cabin, not noticing the temperature drop outside of the cabin, and the sign of only bad things to come.
