Hi :)
This is my first um...sad one-shot. Maybe there will be tears.
Disclaimer: I don't own the Power of Five series.
"And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?"
"Matt, please don't do this," Scarlett pleaded with him. "You don't have to go."
Matt shook his head. "I have to, Scar. You don't understand."
They had just received the letter from Scott, asking Matt to meet with him. Scarlett had heard and become practically hysterical. She knew Matt too well, and she knew something about him had changed in the time between Hong Kong and when he arrived in Oblivion with Lohan. He was even more serious than before. He seemed like he had taken up the role of leader. And, honestly, that worried her.
She was also worried because of what the others had told her about Scott. She knew that Nightrise had taken him and tortured him. She knew he was with the Old Ones. As much as she wanted to, she couldn't trust him. And she did not want Matt going to him.
"What do you mean I don't understand? What do you know that I don't?"
Matt sighed softly, running a hand through his hair. "Please, Scar, I have to go."
"No, we need to figure out what he wants! We can't trust him. We can't trust them."
Matt ignored her. He started to walk away, waiting to see if Richard was coming with him. Scarlett was close to screaming at him. And that's exactly what she did.
"Matthew Freeman, you are not leaving me!" she yelled angrily.
Matt turned to look at her, a surprised look on his face. "What?"
"I know well what's happening. You can't hide things half as well as you think you can." Scarlett said, marching over to him. "You're trying to be a hero when you don't have to."
"You don't get it, I have -"
"You don't have to do anything," Scarlett snapped. "Nobody forced you to decide to meet him, nobody. They actually warned you not to."
"It's the right thing to do," Matt said, that tired look in his eyes. Scarlett had noticed that too. "I know it is, and, I'm sorry, but I'm doing it."
Scarlett shook her head. "Please, Matt. I-I'm afraid I won't see you again."
Matt gave a rueful smile. In that moment, Scarlett knew. It broke her heart. She walked forward and hugged him tightly and felt him hug her back.
"Isn't there anything…"
"It's me they want."
Her eyes began to sting. "I'll miss you."
"I'll miss you too."
Scarlett pulled away from him and, without a second thought, kissed him fiercely, tears pouring down her cheeks. She forgot about the war, the cold, the pain, everything but him. She could tell he felt the same. It ended too soon.
"I love you," Matt whispered, tears in his own eyes.
"I love you too." Scarlett kissed his cheek and hugged him again, not wanting to let go. But then she had to. He had to do this. She let go of him, squeezing his warm hands gently and watching him go, knowing the next time she saw him, his hands would be as cold as the ice she stood on.
Thanks for reading, and I would really appreciate a review.
Now I'm going to go write something of a happier nature.
