A/N: I don't own any of "Medium" characters and I am not making any money from writing this.
Please forgive any minor spelling or grammar mistakes, English is not my native language.
Here it is. My take on the series finale. Basically a last scene... or a first scene of the "episode" that follows after the finale. But I don't envision this as a full story, not now. I always felt that much more could have been done with the final episode of the show, rather than simply have Joe dying. This story doesn't really explore that, but it leaves the door open, so to say. I still hope they might make a "Medium" feature film someday, but if that doesn't happen, I can still dream (ha!)... Really short, it is basically a drabble. A little hope.
She woke up with a groan, immediately sitting up in bed, her body still shivering, her eyes watery and her hair a mess. Her mind was close to blank at first, she was unable to truly understand, grasp, the reality of situation. Had all those events been a reality, or just a dream? But all about it had felt real, true... pain especially.
The mere thought of spending the rest of her life without Joe felt like a gut punch to her. Actually experiencing it was completely heart breaking, equivalent to all the energy being drained, disappearing out of her, a part of her gone... it felt like lousing a soul.
But... if she also dreamt about dying... and she woke up, alive...
The phone rang. Allison flinched, staring at it with wide eyes. With a shaky hand, she picked up the phone and answered the call. Her heart skipped a beat at a familiar voice.
"Hey. Just to let you know that I landed..."
"Joe!", Allison exclaimed, shuddering. "You made it!"
"Uhm... yes", Joe said, surprised by her reaction. "Are you OK?"
Allison sighed. "Yes... I just had a bad dream, that's all."
"Sorry to hear that. Well, at least there is a purpose to each dream, huh?", he commented, making Allison shiver. "Anyway, since you probably have to go to work..."
"No!", Allison said. "I'll go pick you up. I'll call them... they'll understand."
"Uhm... OK. Thank you. See you soon."
"See you soon", Allison repeated silently. She put the phone down slowly, still shivering. Her breathing grew a bit calmer, her heart still thundering against her chest. She stared at the phone in a while, like in a disbelief, eventually letting out a chuckle. Soon afterward, almost instinctively, she stood up and walked over the door, having heard the sound of soft footsteps in the hallway. She listened for one more moment, then opened the door silently.
"Good morning", Allison whispered. Bridgette responded silently, heading back to her room. She still had some time to sleep.
"You... uhm... slept well, sweetie?", Allison asked carefully, looking at Bridgette.
"A-ha", Bridgette answered calmly.
"No bad dreams?", Allison asked softly.
"No", Bridgette answered tiredly, shaking her head, before returning to her room, closing the door behind.
Allison took a deep breath, then went to the bathroom to get ready. That was true, dreams always-or most of the time-had a meaning behind them... but at least she knew that, in reality, there was a hope for a happy ending.
