Meet me at Steele Shore Beach at 1 p.m. sharp. I have a picnic ready for us ~Speedy
Aqualad looked up from the note. 'Yep, this is the right place. Now where is that bastard?' The beach was empty except for a picnic basket sitting on a blanket a few feet from the lapping waves. It was a chilly day, not a beach day for most people, but Aqualad had no problem with cold, the depths of the ocean aren't exactly warm. Aqualad nervously checked the time on his communicator, 1:15. He was beginning to wonder if this was all some sick joke Speedy was playing on him. That or a setup with one of his floozies. Either way, Aqualad was starting to think about just leaving. He walked over to double check that it was the right beach yet again when he saw Speedy walking his way.
He thought it had been some joke, but there Aqualad was, nervously checking the time and the beach sign over and over again. Speedy smirked. He was cute when he was impatient. And Speedy wasn't even late. Aqualad's note had said to meet him at 1:20. He knew this was probably only supposed to be a friendly outing between the two so they could be teenage boys without worrying about annoying Bumblebee or being a bad influence on the twins, but he couldn't help but hope that he would get the chance to tell Aqualad how he really felt.
"Hey," he walked up to Aqualad smiling.
"You're late," Aqualad glared at Speedy.
"What? I'm not late! The note you sent me said 1:20 and," Speedy checked his communicator real quick, "it's only 1:18."
"The note I sent you? But, I got a note from you that said 1 pm sharp. I didn't," Aqualad cut himself off with a smack to the forehead, "Bumblebee. Of course."
Speedy's shoulders slumped. He knew Aqualad would never willingly spend time with him. "Of course, probably her way of getting our fighting out of the house."
Aqualad looked at Speedy's dejected face, "Do we really fight that much?"
Speedy chuckled humorlessly, "Yeah, and it's usually my fault, Fish Boy."
Aqualad smirked at the nickname that he had actually come to find endearing. He sat on the blanket and patted the spot next to him, "No reason to waste a picnic on a nice day."
Speedy smiled and sat down, opening the basket and starting to pull out its contents. They ate in contented silence when suddenly Speedy realized something, he didn't want to confess his love to someone who he didn't even know his real name.
"Hey, Fish Face, what's your real name?"
Aqualad looked at him, slightly stunned, "It's Garth. What's yours?"
"Roy." They both nodded then continued to eat.
"Hey, Garth?"
"Yeah Roy?"
"I think I love you." Garth smiled at the redhead boy and leaned his head on Roy's shoulder, happy that his feelings hadn't been misled.
"I think I love you too, Roy." The two boys ate their picnic then watched the sunset, both extremely happy that Bumblebee had tricked them into their first date of many to come.
