Restless

Dean jerks awake at the sudden movement next to him. Cas has rolled out of his arms and to the far corner of the bed. Dean grumbles and rolls the other way, ignoring Cas and the slight pang of hurt at his absence.

Cas had passed out completely after they were done. His new human body was easily exhausted, and Cas gave into that exhaust without a second thought. Dean, however, was not graced with the luxury of giving into his exhaust most nights. He had developed a bit of insomnia over his years. Not to mention, he had quite a lot to think about this night.

After years of sexual tension, their bodies had finally come together in a confusing and beautiful first time for both of them, Dean with another man and Cas with anyone at all. They were able to laugh through the awkward parts and tell each other when something felt uncomfortable. But most of it involved Dean choking on air as he gazed down at a fucked-out Castiel, hair tousled more than usual, his blue irises like rings orbiting the dark planets of his lust-filled pupils. Dean could hardly handle the way Cas s normally gravely voice cracked and broke around his name, uttering it like a prayer and a curse all at once.

And now here he was, lying next to his wingless angel, thinking over everything that had just happened. He was never one for cuddling after sex, but holding Cas made him feel strong. Like he was able to protect something again. Like the world wasn t falling apart, like he could just hold Castiel and shelter him and everything would be alright. But Cas didn t need him. He never had.

Dean is disturbed from his contemplation by Cas rolling back over and slapping an arm over Dean s torso. Dean chuckles lightly at Castiel s mouth, hanging open and drooling, completely undignified. So unlike the composed, serious Castiel Dean sees during the day.

Dean can t even arrange himself comfortably under Cas s arm before he is moving again, this time pulling the covers off of Dean in the process. Dean sighs. Of course Cas is a restless sleeper. Dean grabs a handful of blankets and pulls hard, causing Cas to whimper in his sleep.

Cas s whimpers continue incessantly. Dean groans and pulls him close again, draping an arm around him. This calms Cas for awhile. He wriggles closer against Dean s front, folding his hands in front of him. Dean closes his eyes and settles in once more.

But Cas rolls away once again, leaving Dean seriously thinking about sleeping on the couch. At least that ll be peaceful. He rolls over to face the wall, angrily contemplating having to get up and move. But then Cas scoots closer to Dean and wraps an arm around him, keeping Dean warm and protected. Dean gasps a little at how good it feels to be lying within Cas s grasp. He turns slightly to look at Cas. His mouth is closed and his face is set in a determined line. No, he mumbles, still rather defiantly. I need you too. With those words, Cas s face relaxes, and he collapses for real against Dean s body, snoring lightly. Dean slowly smiles to himself and settles in next to Cas, thinking maybe restless sleepers aren t the worst thing in the world.
