I do not own anything of Naruto. Shino x Naruto, as for what I don't know at the moment.

The sounds of the campus distracted the young man from his studies. With a sigh he closed his book and put on his jacket. No point in studying at the moment. Today was the arrival of the new students. It was the orientation week. He was a returning junior, but there was no point in not being caught up. The sounds of laughter and shouts rose to his third story window, overlooking the quad. He felt weary already; thankfully he got his own room for the year. Most people were a bit squeamish around him anyway.

Looking back he thought it was his fascination with insects. He was a bio major with a specialization in entomology. It was what his family had done for as long as they could remember, and he was just the most recent in a long line of distinguished scientists. It wasn't his fault that most people didn't respect the complexity of the insect world, or all the grandeur and beauty he saw in it.

But whatever the reasons, he was a loner by happenstance and a quiet observer by nature. So on that sobering thought he decided to go for coffee. He wagered that he needed a pick-me-up. Caffeine seemed like a good distraction from his current inability to study any further. The weather was unusually warm, even for August, and he stepped outside into a blast of warm air. He was wearing loose shorts and tank top. His pale skin dimmed in the lights of the sunset, his body lit up in shades of orange and purple. He made his movements slow on the way to the campus coffee shop, giving silent thanks to the occasional gust of wind.

Sitting down at a table near the window he held his iced coffee in hand and began to observe the people around him. A couple was just across the café, a blonde woman and a dark haired man. Both of them had a fondness for ponytails it seemed. They were talking quietly as they were playing what looked like chess. There was rowdy bunch nearest to the door made up of a party of three freshmen, two boys and a girl. The boy in the scarf ("seriously?" thought Shino, it was ninety degrees outside) was telling a joke to the red haired girl as the boy with what looked like allergies hung on every word.

Just as Shino noticed the faint sound of a Cicada, Meimuna Opalifera, he guessed, the front door chimed with a new arrival. Dark brown eyes took in the student that walked in the coffee shop. He seemed slightly above average in height and his skin was pleasantly tan. The almost caramel color made his white teeth and yellow hair all the more vibrant as he made his way over to the rowdy bunch of teenagers. Shino caught himself staring at the blonde's muscles, which were visible because his wet shirt clung to his body. Apparently a friend of the group, they all yelled what sounded like 'big brother' and raced to hug him first. The older student said something and they raced out onto the quad, starting and Frisbee game.

Draining his cup, and feeling slightly more invigorated, Shino made his way to his dorm complex. Only intermittently being distracted by the insects he spied on the way there. The sounds of the quad had lessoned but it was still lively, and the last rays of daylight were disappearing. Shino didn't notice the bright blue eyes that had followed his form and he went into his dorm.

The cicada's cry seemed stronger now that Shino had reached his room. He fell on his bed and grabbed the book he was reading. His 'Encyclopedia of Insects: First Edition' was well worn, but he handled it with care. He rolled over on his belly and switched of the light. For over a half hour he had just lain there mesmerized by the dance of the fireflies. The last thought on his mind before sleep was the blonde student from the café.

I'm sure I want to go forward with this story. At the moment my plate is kinda full, but I'll try to add to it day by day.
