Blood… a trail of it, leading to a fallen figure, dying, and he knew he couldn't save her. However much Gwen tried, however hard he begged her to hold on, whether by a silent, pleading look or in words, there was nothing any of them could do to save Toshiko Sato; the great beyond called her.

There was a brief moment when Jack realised what had happened, and the whole world seemed to gasp and spasm in pain around him – or maybe it was just the way his heart clenched with grief as he realised they were gone - Owen, too.
And all that stands between the soul's release?
This temporary flesh and bone…
Tears fell from Jack's eyes… from Gwen's and Ianto's, too, but for the moment he was oblivious to them, living in the tragedy of Tosh's and Owen's deaths. Oh, he'd known there was a risk, there were always risks; knew that one day he'd lose them, but he'd hoped it would be to each other, maybe a family, that they'd move on and be happy. Owen's first death had put paid to that, and now, this, his second, maybe only minutes before the woman who'd loved him so constantly, faithfully, with nothing in return. Maybe he'd loved her too; Jack had always hoped so. But what a way for Owen to have gone…

Silently, in his heart, as he held Tosh's body, and knowing that Owen, too, was gone, Jack whispered these words, an unspoken benediction and valediction in one:
