Wally was happiest when he was with her. His girl. They had met in high school. She was super like him, but somehow soft and tough at the same time. She had a hard shell, one only he was allowed to see past. They had gone out ever since his junior year. Even when he looked back, he could still see memories of them…
Shayera was putting some stuff in her locker, when she heard a voice behind her. "What's a pretty girl like you doing by yourself?" She turned around and laughed when she saw Wally. "Sorry cutie, I've got a boy already." He smiled lacing hands around her waist. "You think he'll mind if I cut in on his territory?" She leaned her forehead against his. "I think he'll beat you up." Wally lightly kissed her lips. "Will you come and patch me up if he does?" She kissed his lips in a long and hungry kind of way. "I think so."
Then there was that day, when he came home from work. There was the smell of dinner coming from the kitchen and that's where he went. Everything was already set out, and she was washing the dishes. He snuck up behind her, laced his hands around her waist and kissed her neck. She immediately leaned into his loving grip. "Mmm, sweetheart, you keep that up we might not get to dinner." He smiled. "You're gorgeous, you know that?" She laughed. "You act like you haven't seen me in 10 years Wally." He kissed her cheek. "Well more like 10 hours but they were long. A whole 36,000 seconds I couldn't be with you! You know how long that is?" Shayera laughed, echoing off the walls. "Honey, go get washed up for dinner."
Wally sat down on his bed and started undoing his tie. It sure had been a long time. Almost 15 years! Shayera couldn't have kids, but that didn't mean he didn't love her any less. She worked a job as an interior designer, but got home about an hour before him. He pulled a notebook out of the bookshelf. It was a big scrapbook his mom had made after their wedding day. It showed every step off the way, from awake to asleep. His favorite one was the first one, showing them looking at each other as they came out of the chapel, drowning in each other's eyes.
Shayera came in. "Sweetheart what's taking so long?" Wally looked at her. "I was looking at the scrapbook again. And I wanted to give you this." Wally had gotten her a diamond necklace, for her birthday in two weeks, but now seemed as good a time as any to give it to her. He pulled it out of a drawer and gave it to her. "Oh Wally it's gorgeous! How did you know it's what I wanted?" He pulled her into a hug. "Because you're beautiful and so is it." Shayera smiled and wrapped her hand around his. "Let's go eat, I can try it on after dinner."
This is, was, and ever will be, a good life.
