True Slytherins

Prologue

AN: You got three guesses as to whether I'll ever complete this story, and the first two don't count.

Walking into the great hall of Hogwarts for this first time, he was nervous. Not like the other first-years, who were choking on a ghost story. No, for he knew all about the sorting, and so he was one of the few who had something to actually worry about.

He had to fool the Sorting Hat. Even though it could read his mind.

It was a matter of respect and something else. He'd heard about the houses. Gryffindor for bravery, Ravenclaw for smarts, Hufflepuff for loyalty and Slytherin for cunning. He needed to be seen as one of his chosen house, and to do that, he needed to get sorted there. The hardest challenge he'd ever face.

He absently noted the cheering tables as one by one, the list of students yet to be sorted dwindled. His name was not near the beginning, but not near the end either.

When his name was called, he almost didn't notice, but then he snapped out of his reverie in time to stumble up the stairs and sit on the rickety stool. When the hat was placed on his head, to his surprise, it talked to him immediately, right into his thoughts.

"Daring indeed, yet cunning as well. You'd do well in Slytherin. It could lead you to greatness."

His eyes widened, and he threw his willpower into showing the hat his every Gryffindor quality.

"Oho! That plan is cunning, yet bold enough for any Gryffindor. Very well."

He breathed a sigh of relief as the hat shouted, at long last.

"GRYFFINDOR!"

Across the great hall, a gasp rang out from a hundred mouths in Slytherin, while the Gryffindor table stood silent, not knowing quite how to react.

Composing himself, he walked over to the table of his new house, and sat down.

Draco Malfoy was a Gryffindor. Just as planned.
