Before entering the academy Hinata had one mission in life: To not be seen. Even her appearance was for that goal. Her short hair, her baggy clothing; it was all to make sure nothing about her drew attention.
When, exactly, had she decided she shouldn't even bother being seen anymore? Was it the first time Hanabi, who was five years younger, beat her in a sparing match, or was it when she realized most of her clan wished Neji had been her father's eldest child? Looking back, it was probably when she realized her own father thought she was a failure. For years Hinata made sure she blended into the background, never drawing attention to herself. She quietly went through her life, trying to stay out of everybody's way, all because she thought it was better for her not to be seen.
Nothing changed for her until she met him.
If Hinata's goal in life was to not be seen, Naruto's was to have all eyes on him. Hinata couldn't help but wonder why he of all people wanted to call attention to himself, he was at the bottom of the class. She told herself that Naruto's confidence was just an act. That deep down he must believe what she had always been told: a failure will always be a didn't take long for it to become common knowledge that Naruto challenged Sasuke every chance he could get. It also didn't take long for everybody to notice that Naruto always lost. On a day like any other, after challenging and losing to Sasuke, Naruto did something strange. Instead of finally giving up, Naruto did the last thing Hinata expected him to do...
He smiled.
Hinata didn't know why, but she couldn't get the odd boy or his oddly-timed smile out of her head. He was so unusual, so unexpected... Hinata couldn't even find the words to describe him.
Naruto was always the underdog, but unlike her he never quit or ran away. Hinata started to find his fighting spirit contagious and slowly began to root for the underdog without even realizing it. No matter how bad things looked for him, Hinata saw something proud... something bold in Naruto. He made her wonder what she could do if she tried a little harder... grew just a little bolder. Without even trying, he was changing her.
Somehow Naruto, the "dead last dope" in many peoples' eyes, made Hinata feel like she could do anything.
One day, by chance, she overheard her father call something an enigma, and always looking for some way to improve herself she decided to look the word up in a dictionary.
Enigma (e·nig·ma)

Hinata finally found a word to describe Naruto.
