Chapter 1

Riddick was a loner by nature and he liked it that way. He trusted few people and had never let anyone get too close to him. The only people he trusted were the men who ran his ship and even they were kept at a distance.

Now that he had money, he could afford anything and the ship was his first purchase. Lots of blood had been spilled to get him the money he had. He never killed anyone who didn't deserve it. When they were dead, he would liberate them of their money and belongings.

The people he killed were the worst of the worst. They were the ones that exploited the poor and defenseless. They were the ones that made a profit from the misery of others. Riddick wasn't a noble person, but he wasn't as evil as people seemed to think he was.

Love was a word that he had never known. Love was something that he didn't have time for or any use for. He could always find a woman to satisfy his needs and he didn't need one for anything else.

One day though he is on this planet and he sees a crowd gathered near the cliffs. He stops to see what is going on and discovers that they are auctioning off someone. He stays on the outskirts of the crowd, not wanting to attract too much attention.

The cloak he is wearing keeps people from recognizing him. This has become a problem in the last few years, because it seemed like everywhere he went people knew him. Sometimes it was a good thing, but most of the time it was a bad thing.

The person they are auctioning off is a woman. Riddick instantly feels sorry for her. Nobody deserves to be treated like cattle. The woman probably didn't even do anything to deserve this. She was probably just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

She is surrounded by guards and instinct tells him that she is looking for a way out of this mess. She glances from one guard to another, but doesn't see a way out since they are blocking her paths. For no reason though she suddenly turns to look at Riddick.

He's rarely surprised, but this surprises him. Out of all the people in the crowd, she spots him. He's never seen her before in his life and knows that she couldn't possibly recognize him with this cloak on. It's almost as if she sensed his presence somehow.

He's standing there trying to decide if he should bid on her or bust her out of there, when she glances behind her at the cliff. "Oh no," he says to himself. "The water is a long way down, don't do it."

She looks again at the guards and then glances behind her again. Nobody seems to catch on to this. Riddick is about to make a move, when she suddenly darts toward the cliff. Nobody was expecting it, so the guards didn't have time to grab her.

Riddick can't reach the cliff before her and watches helplessly as she dives into the water. Everyone including him rushes forward to glance in the water, but there's no movement. None of the guards are brave enough to dive into the water.

He curses to himself and then dives in after her. He can't just let her drown. He goes under and searches for her, but she's nowhere to be found. He comes up a few times and goes back under, but she's nowhere.

He swims down a ways and gets out of the water. It's time to leave this planet, so he quickly makes his way to his ship. Poor girl never stood a chance against that cliff. She probably drown instantly.
