Tanith has been possessed by a Remnant three months ago. Captured by a new villain, the remnant inside her needs Tanith to survive. Valkyrie, Skullduggery, Ghastly, and Kenspeckle try to separate Remnant and host.
Only the OCs and the situation are mine.
"Skullduggery?"
The skeleton looked up at Ghastly's soft call. "How are you here, Ghastly? I don't remember giving you the key."
"There are other ways to get in locked doors. I wanted to show you something."
Skullduggery got to his feet, the click of bones the only audible marker of his movement.
"Look what I found." Ghastly was holding a book in his hands. Huge, ancient, and scorched with fire and time, the curling script seemed to squirm against the tailor's hands. "The Book of Kaltor, written in the fifteenth century by the Adept Kaltor Quicksilver. In it, he speaks primarily of Remnants and the dangers and benefits thereof."
"And?" prodded Skullduggery. His friend could be awful dense at times.
"Quicksilver describes some of what would supposedly happen when a huge hoard of remnants was combined with… something of Darquesse's power. From what I've read, it seems pretty accurate so far. It ends in a rather nasty unravelling of the world in general that we should probably do our best to avoid." Ghastly bit his lip, the only sign of nervousness he seemed willing to exhibit. "Also, there are some references to a way of dispossessing a Remnant from its vessel after the standard three days. I think it could be worth a try."
Skullduggery tilted his head in curiosity. "To attempt to save Tanith again. Maybe. Does the book mention any way of fixing the world unravelling problem?"
Ghastly snorted. "Again, nothing but oblique references. Seems to be a real problem in books made by mad mages trying to save the world—or possibly destroy it. Either way, though… it's a problem that looks like it's happening already and if it goes as planned, we really won't have much to talk about. So since we don't currently have an evil villain running around playing at destroying the world or something of the sort, the Council decided you and Valkyrie need to come out and play for this."
"Let me get this straight." Valkyrie's voice echoed through the room. "You were looking for a way to help Tanith. You found a book. You read it, the entire thing, just as part of doing some research that may or may not be in there in the first place."
Ghastly raised his eyebrows. "Of course. It's not exactly easy information to find."
Valkyrie stifled a giggle. "So you've probably read even more dry research books than I have by now."
"Gordon's books don't count! They were never dry," the tailor protested. "Besides, I never read the dictionary."
Valkyrie grinned. "Alright, alright. Back to business. The book mentions that there are ways to get a Remnant out after three days?"
"Not precisely obvious methods, but yes."
"And it also says that the world is going to unravel."
"I suppose you could say that, yes," Ghastly sighed, pushing the book to the side of the table where it sat ominously. "First, though it mentions a- a- a man that will come through named Ominous Drake that basically ends up sucking all of the Remnants into himself, however that works. Destroying the Remnants and their hosts."
"That would be bad."
"The thing is, it makes no mention of how precisely any of this will come about. We just need to stop it."
"Well if it doesn't say how it's happening," replied Valkyrie, "how do we know it'll ever happen? How do we know it's a problem if your book never explains how it happens?"
Ghastly gave her a cold look and she blanched. "Point 1: If it does happen, and we don't do anything about it, it'll kill what little of Tanith there is left. Point 2: If it does happen, and we can't stop it, it'll destroy the world. Point 3: It's started already. It started with you. Darquesse."
