A/N: First fic, first songfic, first romance. Don't be harsh, and remember, every time you flame, a poor homeless kitten named Scruffy starves to death.
Disclaimer: I do not own Legend of Zelda, and the song, Picture, belongs to Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow, not me. Obviously, I'm not making any money off of this.
Malon's Picture
Malon stared at the object in her hand. The frame was wooden, carved in the shape of leaves, and painted a once vivd green that had faded with age, but what caught her eyes was the picture inside.
It showed a blonde man, dressed in a green tunic and tights. He was lean and muscular, and he was standing beside a brown horse with a white mask. Sitting sidesaddle on the horse, happy as a clam and smiling her head off, was a teenaged girl in a purple skirt with a waterfall of flaming tresses.
"Fairy boy..." Her lips shaped the familiar words like old friends, and her eyes screwed shut as silent tears leaked from them. As she clenched the picture, a ray of sunlight caught the golden ring around her index finger, causing it to sparkle mockingly.
I found your picture today
Malon shook her head free of old memories and started burying the pictograph among all the old things in the attic. If her husband caught her with this...she shuddered to think what he would do to her.
I wondered where you've been
Link had left Hyrule, and no one, not even the Princess, had been able to find him since.
I can't look at you while I'm lying
Her mind swept back to that time. Soon after the Hero had left, her father Talon had found her a husband. At first, things were a bit rocky, but she came to care for him, although she knew that she would never love him. Not as she had loved Link, her Hero.
Next to him
Her husband really wasn't that bad. All she had to do was make sure to stay out of his way when he came home after too much milled milk. Because when Ingo got drunk, he was not a happy drunk. When he got drunk, the old Ingo shown through, replacing the kindly man that Ingo usually was.
I thought about you for a long time
One night, Malon lay tossing and turning beside Ingo, who slept through it. She couldn't sleep, her mind plagued by thoughts and memories of the Fairy Boy from the forest. It had been like this for days, ever since she'd found that doggone pictograph.
Fueling up on heartaches and cheap wine
Malon picked it up, and in two gulps, downed the bottle of milled milk. It wasn't her first that day, nor would it be her last. But it was the only way to forget about Link, so that afterward, she could get some sleep.
I can't understand why we're living
But she knew. She knew exactly why Link had left. He wasn't just the Hero of Time, he was the hero. He just couldn't be tied down to one life; it was his job--no, his passion to save the world. When Hyrule hadn't needed him anymore, Link had left to find someplace that did. Twas as simple as that.
Life this way
It hurt. It probably always would, on some level. But it comforted her to know that he hadn't left because of her.
I put your picture away
I wondered where you've been
I can't look at you while I'm lying
Next to him
Since you been gone, my world's been
Dark and gray.
