You remember the first and only time you heard the song. He was playing it on the piano, trying to find the right tempo. He hadn't finished all the lyrics yet and was shy about singing it in front of you. His face turned an adorable shade of red. You can still feel it, the feeling of complete awe that came over you when you saw him really sing, the words coming right from his heart. He was an amazing artist, he always put his heart and soul into his performances; but this was different. More intimate, more personal, like he was sharing an entry of his journal.

That was almost 11 months ago. Hearing it now is like a stab in the gut. His voice is just as beautiful and amazing as when he first sang it to you, making it all the more suffocating. You tried to save yourself the heartbreak of listening, but like always, you cave. When you first heard they were releasing the song, you cried. The pain was unbearable. It still is. You scream, just because it's the only way to get it out. You break the picture frame that holds the image of you both smiling in the backyard, near the pool. Finally, you curl into bed, begging for the pain to end, willing the overwhelming exhausting sobs to stop so you can just sleep. The relief never comes.

Your eyes are glued to the screen. The soundtrack finally leaked. Your song is now a hit with their fans, on repeat on their iTunes. You imagine the warm feeling they get when they hear the song. The same feeling you had. You even download the song yourself in one of those moments of self torture. It no longer brings tears. That surprises you. Just bittersweet memories and a lingering feeling of loss. You made the right choice. He wasn't ready, and you knew that. So you never gave him the chance. You protected him.

You immediately put the song on your ipod and grab the headphones and turn the volume up to the appropriate level and lay down, your head propped up. You put the headphones around your tummy and pressed play. The kicking begins. The baby girl inside you loves to hear her daddy and his brothers singing. You close your eyes and let the gentle hum of the song lull you to sleep.
