I had to create names for Mako and Bolin's parents. It would get repetitive if I had to keep saying, "Mako's father/Bolin's mother", etc.
Kun =mother (Kun means earth in Chinese, I imagined their mother as an earthbender)
Huo =father (This means fire in Chinese, and I imagined their father as a firebender.)
In addition, I do not own anything, all rights go to their respective owners.
"The noodles there were awesome!" Bolin jumped up and down.
"Narook's Seaweed Noodlery does have the best noodles in the city." Kun patted her son's head.
"Can we go there again?" Bolin asked.
"Sure," Huo replied.
"Watch your step, Bolin, I don't want you to trip on the bridge," Kun held his hand.
"Mommy, I can do it myself," Bolin got his hand out of his mother's grip, "I've been to City Park a bunch of times. I know where I am, even in the dark. I can-" Then Bolin tripped.
He got up, "I'm alright!" He turned around in a circle – "See? No scratches!"
Mako rolled his eyes at his brother. He stared at the trees in the distance. They were the colors of flames. Then Mako noticed something happening in the distance.
He tugged on his father's shirt, "Who's that?" Mako pointed to the people a few yards away. Huo looked to where he was pointing; a man was trying to steal the woman's purse.
"I'm going to help her!" Huo ran over to them.
"Huo!" Kun called. He was too far away to hear her.
"Mommy? What's going on?" Bolin asked.
She bit her lip. "…You don't need to know."
"Something is happening though," Mako argued.
"Let's play a game," she grabbed both their hands and lead them back to the bridge. "The goal of the game is stay under the bridge until I come back." Kun glanced back at her husband.
"What's the point of this game?" Mako raised an eyebrow.
She looked at Bolin, then at Mako. "Mako, please listen to me. You have to watch over your brother and make sure that he stays here. Can you do that for me?"
"…Okay," Mako said.
"I love you both," she hugged her sons, "I'll be back soon."
Kun ran over to Huo. The other woman was gone. Huo redirected the mugger's fireball back to him.
"Kun?" He noticed her. The mugger threw another blast at Huo. Huo fell down.
The mugger pick pocketed him. The mugger noticed Kun and started shot a fire stream at her. She put up an earth wall, then lifted the ground up from the mugger's feet. The mugger landed on his back and lay there.
Kun ran over to Huo.
"Are you alright?" She asked.
He nodded and she helped him up. Huo noticed that Mako and Bolin were running towards them.
Kun looked at the mugger. He twitched. She bit her lip.
"Go back to the bridge!" Kun ordered, "…The game isn't over yet!" Mako and Bolin stopped. Then they walked back to their spot.
Huo and Kun watched as they walked back. Their backs were facing the mugger. The mugger got up and then shot fire lashes at the couple. There was a scream.
Thud!
Mako turned around and saw his father fall down.
Thud!
His mother had fallen on top of his father. The mugger saw the brothers. Then he ran away.
They ran over to their parents. Mako sat next to his parents. Bolin was inspecting them.
"What happened?" Bolin asked, "They can't be sleeping."
"…I think they're dead," Mako checked for a pulse. There was none on either parent.
"Dead?" Bolin asked, "That doesn't sound good." Tears rolled down Bolin's cheeks.
"It's going to be okay, Bo. I promise," Mako hugged his brother.
Mako shivered. He took off his father's scarf. Then he wrapped it around his neck.
