I remember the day I was drawn to life, the day my first cartoon aired - my family, Ortensia, Fanny, Pete - I remember everything. 'Course, no one remembers me, a once popular toon rabbit with lots of luck. I guess my luck's run out.
My brother, Mickey Mouse, got the popularity I had, and more. How long has it been since I was locked in this vault? Sixty, seventy years? Maybe eighty? I lost track after year ten. Other toons were put into this vault, only to be released after a year or two. They were lucky; I've never been outside this valued in a long, long time. Hey! Maybe I'll be let out soon! Maybe someone will finally remember me! Maybe I'll be released like the others!
Who am I kidding?! They changed my look twice! None of my original fans will recognize me! I barely look like a black and white toon rabbit anymore. I look more like, what's his name? Thumper, that's it, Thumper from Dad's movie Bambii! That aside, I'll never be able to go home. I don't know much about it, but Dad told me that he had lost the rights to me and all of my cartoons, and that he had left Universal. Before he left though, he promised that he wold come back for me. Now I have a hard time believing that; he died a long time ago. But his words still rang in my long ears,"Someday, I'll come back for you. If it isn't me, then it'll be one who's a part of me, whether in voice or design, I will come back for you, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit."
I was woken up with the rumble of the vault door opening. I didn't see a human, but I did see other tons, five to be exact. I recognized one of them. "Hi-ya there Oswald, haven't seen you in a while. You may recognize these two girls here." Woody Wood-pecker pointed to two girl tons. One was a rabbit like me, and she had a green skirt and green bows. The other one was a cat that in my opinion was really cute. She had a pink skirt and a matching pink hat with a flower sticking out of it.
"Fanny? Ortensia!" I exclaimed as I hi-fived my ex and hugged my cat girlfriend. It's been so long since I've seen them, or really anyone that I used to work with during my cartooning days.
"Oswald we all were so worried about you when Walt didn't bring you home from renewing your contract." Fanny said.
"Are you alright honey-bunny?" Ortensia asked.
"I'm okay guys really. Right now, I'm just happy to see you two again. By the way, who are they?" I pointed to the other two toons.
"Hello there, my name's Gus, I'm a Gremlin."
"And I'm Mickey, Mickey Mouse. You may not remember me, but I was your little brother that you used to play with." I instantly remembered playing with a baby toon mouse, vowing to teach my little brother all of my tricks in cartooning and then some. I flung my arms around him.
"Of course I remember my little brother."
"Not only that Oswald, but the Disney Company managed to get your rights back. Universal traded you for a news sports caster. You're finally going home! Don't worry though, the rest of the gang and I'll visit you." Woody said.
It had been four years since then. I learned that it had been 2006 when I went home. Now it's 2010, and Mickey, Gus and I are getting our own video game that's to be released to stores any day now. There's even talk out a sequel!
Professor Von Drake and the cartoon animators managed to create a type of thinner that could dissolve my coats of paint, and leave only the original image of my lucky self. After that, the Disney Company sent toys, t-shirts, knick-knacks, and hats of me to stores around the world.
Even though I never said it out loud, Walt kept his promise. He created Mickey, and voiced him. That made Mickey a part of him. And in a way, I am too.
