So Much For Your Promises

A Naruto Fan Fic

Sakura Haruno put a hand on her belly. I'm getting so big, she thought. It's been nearly 9 months and I have trouble moving. As her thoughts wandered, her eyes fell upon the reason she had come here: a grey marker, set apart from everything else. A memorial for her friend.

She recalled all of her memories of the deceased ninja. She remembered his huge smile as he said, "Don't worry, Sakura-chan, I'll always protect you!" She remembered the night that they had made passionate love together, the night that the child she carried inside her was conceived, when he said, "We'll be together forever, Sakura-chan. That's a promise!" And she remembered him always saying, "Just you wait, everybody, I will achieve my dream!"

But most clearly of all, she remembered the last time she saw him alive. He had been mortally wounded protecting her. With the last of his strength, he slew the culprit and his allies. She tried to save him with her medical ninjutsu, but with no luck. She couldn't stop crying, refusing to believe that he was going to die. And she especially remembered his last words:

"Don't cry, Sakura-chan. I won't die, and that's a promise. Because…I love you."

Wiping a tear from her eye, Sakura forced herself to return to the present. With great difficulty, due to her massive stomach, she bent over and placed some flowers on the grave. Turning to leave, she addressed the tomb.

"So much for your promises," she said with a wistful look in her eye. "But, even so, I shall love you for as long as I live."

"Naruto Uzumaki."
