He would die. It was that simple. That's why he couldn't. There was no other reason – that he could think of. Other than that Light probably didn't like males. But he didn't seem to into females either, so it was a possibility.
He watched the teen clacking away at his computer, doing his research for being fake-L. It consumed most of his time now a days. Ryuk had determined that he hated Misa-Misa and so he spent most of his time with Light instead of her. Besides, Light had her Death Note. Actually, he had all three Death Notes – Jealous' (which Rem had brought to Earth and gave to Misa), Rem's (which he had stolen after Rem died), and his own (which was in possession of the investigation team).
So as he watched the human that he had spent many a year with – six to be exact - type on his computer, he realized that he had enjoyed every one of them. The boy was smart and dark. Heartless and cunning. He smiled every time the boy told a lie. Laughed as he hurt and used those that cared for him.
The death of L was more that likely the saddest thing he had ever seen, even if he hadn't been there. Light had been L's first friend, and he smiled as he watched the young man die.
It turned Ryuk on in a horrible way.
The sadistic way Light toyed with the victims he knew well, strung them along before extinguishing them. It was the only reason Ryuk hadn't killed Misa himself. The annoying girl clinging to Light. His Light. Kissing him and hugging him and whispering sweet things to him. It made Ryuk sick.
He munched his basket of apples as he watched the young man shut off his computer. Light turned and looked at him. "What are you looking at so intently, Ryuk-san?"
He knew it was only a matter of time before Light would kill everyone that stood in his way, leaving only him and Ryuk alone together, he could see how far he could get with the human before it became dangerous. Ryuk smiled as he placed the last apple into his mouth. "Nothing, Lightu-kun," and that was good enough for him.

Keri: You'll see that Ryuk calls like "Lightu" that's because in the anime (in Japanese) he says Light's name like that. I don't know if that's just how Ryuk talks or just the language, but it sees that Ryuk adds the u more than anyone else. So I think it's cute and kept it.
