Hi everyone. This is my very first story!
After pondering on what I should write for a few weeks, I decided that I should warm up with something short and sweet and move on from there onto bigger projects. I hope you enjoy!
Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto

One Step at a Time

"Hey . . ."

"Hi . . ."

A leaf tumbling from its perch to the ground. The wind's wave through the grass. The dance of shadows over a bare patch of the earth. Anything to distract their eyes from looking at each other.

Well this couldn't be more awkward.

Sasuke was many things. Stoic, temperamental, focused, stern, a bit on the mean side . . . but he was NOT awkward. However, when presented with a particular situation, concerning a certain someone, he was . . . at a loss on how to proceed.

Standing before him, with her hands clasped together on her diaphragm, was none other than Hyuga Hinata. Sasuke glanced towards her as she shifted her head to the side. Her eyes still gazing elsewhere. She had cut her fringe recently, so her hair didn't hide her eyes as much as she probably would liked right now, he noted.

"So," he began, "I'll see you around then." He moved slightly to the left then, and began to walk.

Hinata raised her head at that and looked at him, "Uchia-san, I'm sorry."

Sasuke stopped walking and looked at her. Right in the eye this time, no dancing around with fake ignorance, "For what?"

"For, um . . ." he watched her battle to keep his gaze, and for a moment he thought her eyes might dart away to the nearest distraction again. But then something steadied in her face, her pale eyes became slightly more solid and her shoulders dropped minutely. "If I had stayed longer last night what would you have done?"

She wanted to know if he would have left instead. If it was all just a whim and a spur of the moment 'thing'. Which, in all truth, was not completely incorrect.

He had been angry, and she had been kind. She was always kind. Quiet - and docile to the point she could be mistaken as weak. And honest. She had bluntly pointed out that though his anger was justified, he was being entirely too selfish. Not words he hadn't heard before, but . . . the way she put it . . . or maybe it was just her.

The first time he began to . . . recognise her, was a little over five months ago. They'd had a mission together along with her teammate, Shino. All three being quiet people, not much was said or talked about besides mission tactics and polite conversation. Her breeding had shown in her manners. Hyuga heiress indeed, he had thought.

He watched the wind catch a lock of hair on the right side of her face, and brushed it over her lips and nose. Her hand came up to tuck it neatly behind her ear, before sliding down to her left elbow in a makeshift arm cross. This time her eyes sliding away due to his silence. A hint of a blush coloring her cheeks.

He could hear Sakura and Naruto behind him in the distance arguing about something. Loud idiots. Along with the rest of the gang, that she was probably heading up to meet with.

Sasuke turned fully to Hinata, and after staring at her for a beat, looked into the sky wishing for some answer to come to him from some deity somewhere. And then decided on the one that was most likely the truth.

"I would have kissed you again."
