Chapter 1: Crosstown Traffic
The sun glared on Go City, its fierce rays beat down on the concrete. For days the air had felt dank and stale, it seemed to hang over the city, lingering even as the sun set. But the weather seemed particularly awful along the southern side of the city. It couldn't be worse for Brick Flagg, as he stumbled around in a cheap rental car he had gotten earlier, hearing the voice of his partner, Kim Possible.
"Brick, do you have any idea what could happen if we're too late? We should have been down at the wharf 30 minutes ago, when Wade called us. What's your damage, Brick?"
"Sorry Kim, but you know how tight security is lately. The guards wouldn't let me out before they scanned the building. Then I had to get the case files, and… Well you try doing that when you're still feeling 5 cans of Guinness in your system and..."
"You're still drinking? I thought you ended that about a month ago."
"Kim, I just got done talking to Wade about my habits, I don't need this from you too. Besides, it isn't like you haven't done the same yourself. I saw how you were when…"
Brick stopped what he was saying and stared at Kim. The traffic was steadily worsening, and both of them knew they were probably going to be even later. But as Kim glared back at Brick it became obvious to him that wasn't what was bothering her. She began talking again, sounding even more furious.
"…'When you lost Ron.' That's what you were going to say, isn't it? What the hell kind of an argument is that for going to work barely sober? Besides, I got over it because I knew I had to..."
No you didn't, Brick thought. He stared back at Kim, noticing the dark circles around her eyes, the slight trembling of her body as she turned the steering wheel. She's been moving slower lately, her leaps and punches aren't as strong as they used to be. I'd better shut up, she's under enough stress.
"Fine, I'm barely sober right now. Is there any point to bickering about that right now? Let's just drop it and concentrate on what we're going to do." Brick said, still annoyed.
Kim didn't respond, she just gave a slightly surprised look, and nodded. She turned sharply through an intersection, almost startling her partner. After turning her right blinker on, she parked the car at the docks. She stepped out the vehicle, along with her partner. They could see a warehouse nearby; their destination was within walking distance. But even as they approached it, all they could hear were the waves nearby, and the faint sounds of traffic echoing in the distance.
"You're just like crosstown traffic,
So hard to get through to you,
I'll need to run over you,
All you do is slow me down,
But I've got better things to do on the other side of town"
-Crosstown Traffic, Jimi Hendrix
