Severing Ties
Kouya packed the box carefully, wrapping the old phone in bubble wrap and filling the box with packing peanuts. It wouldn't do for one of the phones to be damaged in transit. That would mean another detail to take care of, and she just wanted it to be over. They both did.
They wanted that feeling of freedom that only came when all ties to the old had been well and truly severed. They needed their rebirth to be complete.
Frankly, their new life wasn't all that much different from the old; School, friends, time spent with one another. And yet there was a lightness to it, a blessed sense of relief, though it was still shadowed by fear. There was no guarantee that they were safe from Nagisa and the others of the Seven Moons, no guarantee that their defection would truly be accepted. They were easy enough to find, she knew.
They'd made tentative plans to flee the city if necessary, though both hoped it wouldn't come to that. There was always suicide, of course, but that was equally unappealing. They wanted to live our their lives normally, as ordinary people. As Just Yamato and Just Kouya.
Kouya taped the box closed, Yamato holding the edges in place as she pressed the tape down. Teamwork, as always. Yamato handed her a black marker, and she wrote in the address--not Nagisa's address, of course, but the address of a contact who would make sure it got to her. She left the place for the sender's name blank; Nagisa would know whom it was from, she was sure.
Standing, Yamato offered her a hand up, and she took it, the package clutched firmly in her other. Both were solemn and withdrawn on the walk to the post office, reflecting on the past. But once the package was sent, the postal fee gladly paid, she felt as though a weight had been lifted off her shoulders.
Yamato felt the same way, if the smile on her face and the spring in her step were anything to go by. She even took Kouya's hand in her own, swinging their joined hands back and forth as they walked. This was a time for rejoicing, and the possible dangers-- What if they were found by Nagisa? What if they were found by another fighting team? What if Soubi changed his mind and came after them again?-- were pushed back into the recesses of her mind, to be worried over another day. Right now, Yamato was all that mattered.
"How about we go to Misudo and get French cruellers?" she suggested.
"Will you treat me?" Yamato asked, winking.
"Yes," she answered, "but don't eat too many, you'll put on weight!"
"And then you'll leave me for a skinny girl?"
"Of course," Kouya deadpanned.
"Liar." Yamato smirked.
Their hands still linked, they proceeded to Misudo to stuff themselves with donuts.
Two ordinary girls, doing something utterly mundane. It was bliss.
