NEON GENESIS EVANGELION VIEWED AS AN UPHILL BICYCLE RACE Japan's star cyclist, Akira Katsuragi, begins but runs into another cyclist (Adam) and is blown up. His place is taken by Gendou Ikari, despite a quarrel among the judges, though the media calls nepotism.
Ikari is slow but crafty, manouvering so as to get most of the other players to go off the road.
Ikari passes the baton to his son, and continues giving direction. The late Katsuragi's daughter aids him, despite having two female cyclists to direct as well.
Shinji goes off the road, incurring a short penalty, but he is considered to good a cyclist to disqualify. Though mostly competing with the other two cyclists on Team Japan (one of whom is a transfer from Team Germany as an act of goodwill after the late Katsuragi's awful disqualification from the race) they at times work together to defeat The Messengers, a private team of church couriers who are skilled and tend to play dirty.
Rei, one of the members of Team Japan, is directed by Ikari to take out one of the Messengers via the baton (a relic from Lance Armstrong), and loses it in the process, incurring a foul, and two of the team members are forced to withdraw for the remainder of the race.
Shinji makes it to the top, barely edging out the last of the Messengers, however the council of judges decide disqualify him from the game. A mob of fans of opposing teams attack Team Japan, but Shinji sneaks away and steals the winner's cup.
Eventually, he gets guilty over stealing it, and simply breaks it. He comes out unscathed, but the fans are generally unsatisfied because of the lack of a clear winner.
