Masquerade

Prologue

Once upon a time, in a city called Gotham, there lived a girl named Artemis. She had a mother, a father, and an older sister named Jade.

They were a small family. And, although they weren't rich, they somehow got by. Now, as much as little Artemis loved her parents, she never knew what her parents did for a living. (For some reason, Mommy and Daddy never got around to telling her.) All she knew was that Mommy kept odd hours at night and Daddy was an expert at all sorts of combat. And, somehow, that helped pay the bills.

Then, one day, it all came crashing down—Mommy had to go away for a very long while and Jade left without a word. All that was left of the small family unit was little Artemis and her daddy.

Living with Daddy, as little Artemis came to realize, wasn't easy. He had high expectations of her and, more often than not, he always looked at her as though she fell short of those expectations. Still, not wanting to disappoint him, the young girl continued following his training regimen. After all, if Daddy left, then who will be there for her? No one.

Then, one day, everything changed—Mommy came back and Daddy left. Now, it was just her and her mommy.

At last, Artemis was a young girl no longer but a young woman. Older and wiser, Artemis realized many things about herself and her father. One, her father was not a very good man. Two, she never wanted to be anything like her father. Three, she had a long way to go if she didn't want to be a part of the League of Shadows.

Disclaimer: I don't own Young Justice or any of the DC characters.

A/N: This story takes place in an alternate universe. I've taken a few liberties with the show. (Normally, I'd try to stick as close as possible…but, it didn't work out for what I want to happen in my story.) Anyway, the age at which Artemis joins Young Justice has definitely changed. And more changes will be revealed as I dig deeper into the story. This story is also the first part of my "Fairy Tales" series.
