Hermione plays football

Hermione, Ron, and Harry arrived in the great hall that first morning with a sense of curiosity. At the feast the night before, Dumbledore had announced a surprise for the new school year which would be revealed at breakfast. They sat down on the benches, and immediately green slips of paper materialized in front of them. Hermione read hers quickly:

Welcome Back to Hogwarts! We are pleased to announce that the staff has decided to incorporate physical activities into the mandatory school year. Every student will be pre-selected to participate in one of the following non-magical sports:

Tennis- Professor Mcgonagall

Baseball- Headmaster Dumbledore

Soccer - Professor Trelawney

Track- Professor Vilmor (new)

Football- Professor Snape

Hermione Granger will participate in : Football

Her jaw dropped. Football?! Me?! I am probably the least football-ish person in hogwarts! I don't even know what the bloody game is…bloody running into other people..bloody rubbish. Absolutely insane! And with Snape! What misery…Her thoughts continued to reel in general shock and anxiety. Harry and Ron noticed her silence. "Football? Aw that's a grand muggle sport, it is. Erm, well, it's sort of, well, a boy sport, but.. erm…,"Ron trailed off with an indignant glare from Hermione, and looked at his own paper.

He moaned. "Bloody hell! I have to play tennis. It's a pansy sport! Can we switch, Hermione? They better not make me wear those girly outfits!" Harry blinked. "I'm doing track…." Silence from Ron. And Hermione.. "Errr does anyone know what it is?" Hermione rolled her eyes. "It's a series of events that involve running, throwing, and jumping. So much better than what I have to do." Harry didn't know what to think, but it sounded interesting.

However, many people in the great hall that morning were upset at the sports they had been chosen to do. In response to the grumbling, Dumbledore stood and clapped his hands for attention. "Now, now. I ask that you all have open minds as you begin your sports. The purpose of this endeavor is not only to get the student body in shape, but to boost camaraderie between the houses. Trying something new won't kill you." He said the last part with a twinkle in his eye.

The first day of the new school year was to be used to meet with the designated coaches, (which consisted various teachers that had or had not experience) and to get equipment. The rest of the week was going to be used for the students to learn about their specific sport. The footballers were to meet Professor Snape on the quidditch field.

Hermione waved goodbye to her friends in a depressed manner, and wearily made her way to the fields, wondering who else was to be on her team. It was a gorgeous day outside, not a cloud in side. There's at least that, Hermione thought to herself. When she arrived, most everyone was already there, except Snape. She looked around.

It seemed to be pretty evenly mixed among the houses, with Fred Weasley, Dean Thomas, Seamus Finnegan, and a few others from Gryffindor. The bad part was that Malfoy and his two cronies were there. The other bad part was that, as she looked around, she realized she was the only girl! There had to be a mistake…..
