Climbing Higher

"Sometimes," Kagome said as they stopped for a moment on the mountain road, "I like to stop, and turn around and see how far I've climbed."

She turned around and looked down to the valley below her. Light gleaming off the rice paddies just flooded glinted in the afternoon sun, far away. They had only been walking about an hour up the steep mountain path, but the distance to the valley below amazed her. InuYasha, standing behind her, wrapped his arms around her and gazed down with her.

"Yeah," he said. "It really gives you a sense of how far we've come." He kissed her cheek. But then he rotated her around to look up at the high country they were standing in, and the road that reached up higher.. "But when you get up here, there's stuff you just can't see from where you started. Makes me want to see what more there is to see just up beyond the next rise."

She relaxed into his hold, rested her hand on top of his. "Sort of reminds me of our life together. Sure never imagined I'd be here today the first time I saw you."

"Keh," he said. "And the best is yet to come, I bet." He let her go, then knelt down on one knee. "Wanna ride? Let's see how far we can go."

"Sure thing," she said, climbing on his back. "Wouldn't miss it for the world."
