After rounding up what few kittens they could catch after the Slayer did her drunken rant and freed the entire table stakes before storming out with an exasperated Spike following after her, the grumpy demons started their poker game again. In an attempt to ease the tension in the room, Clem stated while dealing, "Hey, guys, at least she didn't slaughter any of us. That means things can only get better, right?"
Reluctant grunts of agreement came from the rest of the players, who gathered up their cards. Which now included sitting among them at the table a complete stranger dressed in a midnight-black robe with a hood completely covering his features. The surprised demons stayed frozen in shock as they all watched this newcomer's skeletal fingers casually collect his own card hand and bring this up to the front of the hood, evidently studying what he'd just been dealt.
A second later, before anyone else could speak, an announcement carrying within it the sound of crypt doors slamming shut penetrated the brains of the other demons without bothering to travel through their ears:
I CALL.
"Fold," Clem instantly declared, tossing his four aces onto the table. This action was copied at once by his fellow players, who also chorused their disinclination to further participate.
Laying his cards face down on the tabletop, the robed stranger stood up from his chair, reached out to pick up the mewing kittens in their basket, and then he vanished into thin air, taking his winnings with him.
Of the several demons now all glaring at Clem, it didn't take long for one of them to say with utter disgust in his rough voice at the sheepish being having supremely loose skin, "You just had to open your big mouth, didn't you? That's it, I'm leaving before things get even weirder tonight!"
Author's Note: It just all came together for me: the BtVS episode 'Life Serial' and the Paul Kidby painting of the Discworld Death patting a cute little kitten.
