Movie Night
"Happy anniversary," Adam said as he snuck up behind Fiona at The Dot. He squeezed her shoulders gently when she jumped and kissed the side of her head as he sat down next to her.
She bit her bottom lip. "It's our anniversary?" she asked carefully. They weren't a couple who celebrated every month, but she knew six months was coming up soon. She began counting days in her head when he spoke again.
"No," he told her. "I just wanted an excuse to give this to you." He pulled a long, thin rectangle wrapped in newspaper out of his jacket and put it on the table in front of her.
"Professionally wrapped, I see."
"Only the best for my princess. Open it."
She examined the package for a moment. "Is it a pony?"
He smiled and shook his head.
"Right. It's too small to be a pony. Kitten?"
"Open it," he said again.
She finally tore the paper open and looked at the disk case. "A DVD."
"Blue-Ray," he corrected. "Far superior viewing experience."
She nodded. "Let Me In," she read the title, flipping the case over to read the summary on the back. "Have I seen this movie?"
"Not really. It's the English remake of Let the Right One In."
She smiled, turning to look at him again. "You remember."
"Of course I remember. It's your favorite movie. We watched it on our first date. And our second and third and…"
"Hey, hey," she interrupted in mock anger. "How many times have you made me watch Avatar?"
"You love Avatar."
She smiled again. It was a bit long for her liking and she'd fallen asleep while watching it several times, but it was growing on her.
"Anyway, I kinda lost track of how many dates we've been on, but I thought whatever number this is, we could watch this tonight. It'll be nice to be able to understand what they're saying."
She rolled her eyes, still smiling. "It was subtitled."
"Yeah, but it'll be nice to watch it for once in a language I actually understand," he said, careful to avoid the reason he had no idea what the movie was really about. Saying it was difficult for him to focus on reading subtitles when she was curled up close to him would be an understatement.
"It would be nice for Avatar to not be five hours long."
"Three and a half," he told her. She opened her mouth, but he kissed her quickly. "Happy not-anniversary."
AN: for those of you who haven't been watching Degrassi long, Fiona said once her favorite movie was Let the Right One In (during her first date with Riley in Shoot to Thrill), it's a Swedish movie. Let Me In is the English-language remake, but won't be released on DVD until February so it would be too late for a Christmas gift and too lame for a Valentine 's Day gift. So I decided on a just-because sort of anniversary gift.
