Draco was panicking. He had no reason to be panicking, yet the panic was still building up in his chest, like a bubble about to burst. He turned to Astoria, again.
"What did you say?" he asked. He must've heard wrong.
"I'm pregnant! Isn't it great?" Astoria looked at Draco with concern in her eyes, and Draco did try to keep his panic down, but he really couldn't. He held up a single finger to her and turned around.
"I need a moment," he said.
His legs moved as if they weren't his.
He couldn't remember willing himself to go outside, but he found himself there, anyway, the fresh air hitting his lungs like a fresh burst of life.
He felt terrified. He couldn't be a dad.
He tried to take several deep breaths, all at once, which just resulted in him getting too much air and feeling even more panicky.
He felt a hand wrap around his shoulder, without even realizing that someone came outside. Without looking, he knew that it was Astoria. He just knew her touch that well.
He loved her.
"How?" he asked. Draco felt slightly out of breath.
"Well," she said, pulling up a chair with a wave of her wand, "when two people love each other very much -"
"No, I know," Draco said, cutting her off as she laughed. It was a clear sound, cutting through the night sky.
"Are you upset?" Astoria asked. She sounded slightly worried.
"Yes," Draco said, biting his lip. "No," he added immediately after. "I don't know," he decided.
"Talk to me," Astoria urged. She scooched her chair closer, leaning her head on Draco's shoulder and Draco could feel his heart melt.
He was reminded of the reason he fell in love with her - she wouldn't ever leave him alone.
He needed that, sometimes.
"I'm not sure I'm ready to be a dad," Draco admitted. His hands felt like they were about to start shaking, so he found Astoria's and intertwined their fingers.
"I'm not ready to be a mum," she said, letting out a breath, "but we're going to have to figure this out, right?"
"I guess," Draco agreed.
"And you're going to be the best dad ever, mark my words," Astoria asserted, giving Draco's hand a squeeze. He squeezed back, with a light chuckle.
"We'll see." Shifting a bit, Draco put his hand on her stomach. "We're going to have a baby," he said. His voice sounded a little bit hoarse.
"A baby," Astoria repeated. She moved one of her hands to rest it over Draco's hand on her stomach.
"A family."
