Author's Note: Just a few lines that were in my head and wouldn't go away. Something that had to be addressed now that we know what we know. Right - I'll try to get back to chapter 3 of Reward now!
Had Alex met Gene before? The answer was yes. In the future, or in the past - whichever way you wanted to look at it...
Between the emergency services and the police, they had to close the whole road off. And cordon off the school gate - didn't want any of the school kids wandering on to the scene. There was nothing they could do for the adults, the ambulancemen knew that. That's why they were concentrating their efforts on the little girl, unconscious on the ground.
"Yeah, keep the oxygen going," one of them was saying. "Soon as she seems stable, we'll move her to the ambulance."
"Right."
"Is she okay?" The man with the beard was saying. "Please let her be okay..."
"We're doing the best we can, sir - just give us some room, yeah? We're gonna move her to the ambulance in a minute."
Reluctantly, the bearded man moved back.
"She seems a bit calmer now," the first ambulanceman observed. "Let's get her moved, yeah?"
Any observers that day would have recounted how the little girl ran back to the car when her mother called; and how she was only feet away from the car when it went up... how the bearded man was too far away to do anything... how the little girl woke up in hospital and the bearded man took her home.
While she had been unconscious, she had been safe - for she had been in the care of the Gene Genie.
