"It's time, Maple. You promised."
A orange she-cat with black stripes started wailing in the corner of the alley. "Twist, please! Don't make me give away my kit!" Twist, an orange black striped kit with white patches sat playing with a leaf happily in the corner. "I'm gonna be the best fighter in Twist's camp!" Maple stared at Twist. "He's your kit too, Twist!" Twist snarled right in her face. "If you want to be in my group Maple, you have to abide by my rules. And my rules say that to prove you can be merciless, you have to kill a cat on the border, or give away your first kit." Maple swallowed a sad retort. She had two choices: Give away her precious kit, or die at the paws of Twist. "Okay. But can I do it myself?" Twist looked reluctant. Finally Twist nodded. "Be quick." Twist walked off into another part of the alley. Maple padded up to her kit. "I'm sorry, kit. You are my kit, always remember that, dear. I don't want to leave you, but I have to if I want to live, and if I don't do that Twist will surely kill you and me. I hope you know why I have to do this-" Maple choked on her words. "But I don't want to." She picked up the tiny scrap of fur and headed towards the end of the alley. "Mom, wha?-" And she got dropped on the border. "You have been strong, my love. If anyone asks you your name, you are Tiger." Suddenly footsteps sounded in the distance. "Goodbye, little Tiger." The footsteps got closer. Maple started to run. "Mom! What's going on?" What have I done? Giving away my own kit just to stay in my birth group? She wanted to wail, but it would do her no good. No good at all. It wouldn't bring back Tiger, and it wouldn't make Twist change his mind.
It was over.
She passed the test.
