Toes (Sherlock BBC Fanfic)

John had been aware for quite some time that his relationship with his flatmate was not what many would consider to be 'normal'. Not that John was worried about normality in any way – in fact normal was overrated at times. It could not be denied, however, that most flatmates didn't use each others belongings as if they were their own – including phones, laptops, weapons and various articles of clothing. Certainly permission was asked before possessions were appropriated. Most flatmates didn't drag the other along by the hem, walk with their hand in your pocket or invade your bed while you slept.

Once they started a romantic relationship, Sherlock became a bit obsessed with physical contact – resulting in some awkward hugs, hand holding and even the odd peck to the forehead. He settled down after a while, much to John's relief, and things went back to what was considered normal – there was that word again – for the two of them.

With one minor difference.

When Sherlock had first started plastering himself all over John in bed, there had been a small amount of distance involved. Sherlock had leaned on John, knotted his hands in whatever John was wearing and gone to sleep. Sometimes there was spooning and sometimes there was pinning involved, but that was it for the most part.

Now they were officially lovers, there were toes involved. Sherlock had big feet with long toes – almost prehensile. John had been well aware that Sherlock wriggled his toes when thinking – and no, John was not comparing the action to a cat kneading with its paws, not at all – or that the man sometimes laced his toes together when curled on the couch. He'd never bothered to remark on these habits, had barely given them a second thought.

And he wasn't going to bother with the old wives tale about men with big feet. Catch your own big footed man and find out for yourself was his thinking on that issue.

It was just that sometimes when he woke up in bed, along with the Sherlock-limpet that was plastered all over him; Sherlock had insinuated his toes between John's. They had established that John was not interested in holding hands in public – neither was Sherlock, though he'd been under the impression that it was important in their relationship – but it seemed that Sherlock unconsciously felt that some sort of holding was required. Hence the fact that John woke up on five mornings out of seven holding toes with his lover.

In a way, then, it was fitting that both the fingers and toes of a human were called phalanges. Holding phalanges with your lover sounded… normal.
