AN: Small drabbli-sh Warren/Layla. Had to write it after seeing the movie and some things just didn't line up. More (unrelated) drabbles will probably follow.
Why did Warren wear a tux? The question had been swimming in Layla's mind ever since the dance three weeks ago. Will had told her about his conversation with the pyro in the Paper Lantern, and she knew now that the façade was broken long before the dance took place. And if Warren hadn't worn a tux as an aid to make Will jealous, what purpose could it have held?
Of course he could have just had it lying around, an unused article formerly belonging to his father, but it was more than that. Why had he been the one to hold her hand as the school dropped out of the sky and hurtled towards the ground? Why did she feel eyes on her back when Will kissed her before running off to fight Royal Pain?
If she focused on these little things then eventually her ponderings would lead her to larger questions. Why had he approached her in the Paper Lantern in the first place? Why burn her hand only after her gaze had fully focused on Will? Most importantly, why agree to take her to the dance in the first place?
Logically she knew that he wasn't as bad as his reputation would have her believe. Approaching her could have just been the gentlemanly thing to do; she was sure she'd looked pretty melancholy and pathetic in those dim lights at the restaurant. He might have agreed to take her to the dance just to make Will jealous, but then her mind revolved back to the tux again. When she added in the small glances and flashes of undefined emotion she saw behind his eyes, something just didn't make sense.
Maybe if she'd looked for long enough she would have recognized the pain in his eyes whenever he saw her with her boyfriend.
