"And if love is really forever, then I'm a winner at a losing game."
He would never stop thinking about how her long, red hair fell down in perfect curls below her shoulders. He would never stop hearing her song-like laugh in his head. He would never stop dreaming about her brilliant green eyes that had captivated him for so long.
He also would never express his feelings for Lily because his best friend was in love with her.
James' love for Lily was truer and stronger than anything that Sirius could ever offer her. James loved her with everything he had, his whole heart and being. He would sacrifice anything for that redhead -he would be everything that she needed.
Sirius wanted to be able to give her that kind of love but he knew that he couldn't. He loved her, there was no doubt about that, and he knew that he would never feel the same way about another girl but his heart couldn't be totally taken. He could never be one-hundred percent committed to any relationship and Lily was no exception. Sirius had never learned to love someone with all that he had -his parents had never taught him that. He had never felt that unconditional love that a mother and father usually gave to their child and, consequently, he did not know how to give it to another human. Little flings and unfaithful relationships were his specialties because the second he thought he was getting to close to a girl, he would break it off. He loved Lily but he could never let her have his heart -it was his and only his.
Even though he loved her as strongly as he could, he would never say anything because the love that his best friend had for that fellow Gryffindor was way too strong to mess with. Lily deserved that kind of love and James deserved that kind of girl. Everything about her made him doubt his belief that he could never give someone his heart. He would never find out, though. It did not matter to him if these feelings lasted forever because he couldn't do that to James.
Even if this losing game of his went on forever, he still felt like he won something and that was that he knew that, unlike his parents, he was capable of loving. Maybe not with his whole heart, like James, but he was okay with that.
