Prompt: Peeps [as in the candy, headphones, masking tape, notebook
Do NOT include in the story: secondary ships
Peeps were not among Janet's favorite candy. Sweet, yes. Sugary, definitely. And cute, too...or maybe that was the problem. Janet just didn't like the thought of eating cute little chicks.
That thought obviously didn't bother Daniel in the least, seeing as he was now downing his fifth one.
"Coffee and Peeps?" Janet asked, her nose wrinkled in disgust.
"You said I had to eat something." Daniel replied defensively.
"I meant real food, Daniel, not junk."
Daniel gave her a guilty look as he grabbed the package of Peeps and started towards his office. "I promise, I'll have something in a little bit. I just need the sugar right now. I'm so close to finishing the translation from the tablets SG-13 found on P7B-897."
Janet crossed her arms and gave him a Look.
"It could be the cure for cancer," Daniel said with a sly grin.
Right. And she was the Queen of Sheba.
"Oh, go on," Janet said as she shook her head and rolled her eyes. It was pointless to argue with him. It would just slow his progress, which would only lead to yet another sugar and caffeine binge.
"But if you're not finished by 6:00, I'm coming after you!" she called as he retreated down the hallway.
Janet glanced at the clock. It had been some time since Daniel had shut himself in his office. Still, dinner hadn't quite finished baking so it wasn't time to pry him from his work just yet.
Deciding that she should straighten up the kitchen before dinner, Janet picked up a few of the things Hurricane Cassie had left in her wake when she'd come in from school. An Algebra book, notebook, an iPod with headphones, pencils... Janet sighed. Hurricane, indeed. Funny how one teenage girl could make the whole house look like it had been hit by a natural disaster.
A loud crash from Daniel's office made Janet jump.
"I'm okay!" Daniel's voice echoed down the hallway.
Apparently Cassie had help when it came to wrecking the place.
Janet shook her head as she dropped Cassie's belongings in her bedroom and started toward Daniel's office. Heaven only knew what he'd broken this time. Slowly pushing the door open, Janet leaned her shoulder against the door frame and peered into the room. There Daniel sat, a roll of masking tape in hand as he tried to reattach the misshapen shade to the lamp that he'd obviously knocked off the desk.
"So was it the cure for cancer?"
Surprised by her voice, the lamp slipped from Daniel's grasp and once again clattered to the floor.
"Uhhh...not quite," he replied.
"How about clumsiness?" she asked as she walked into the room, a twinkle of humor in her eyes.
"Obviously not," Daniel said, making a joke at his own expense.
"You know what I think, don't you?"
"Too much sugar, not enough good food," Daniel replied in rote.
Janet narrowed her eyes, "That's right. And dinner is almost ready, so if you want any more of these," she said, swiping the box of Peeps from his desk, "I guess you'll just have to come and eat some real food now."
Expecting him to chase after her, Janet took off down the hallway towards the kitchen.
For a split second, Daniel considered grabbing another box of Peeps from his secret stash so he could finish the last of the translation. But he quickly changed his mind and tore down the hall after Janet.
After all, sugar highs were good for more than just work.
The End
