There's no life in those eyes. The woman lying here no longer bears any resemblance to Audrey Raines. She has the look of a woman who has been through more than any woman should have to go through. She wears no expression; she just lays there, staring sightlessly into space, unaware of anything that is going on around her. People come and go; her father sits and talks to her for a while before departing, and the doctors try to get her to communicate, but for Audrey, they simply don't exist. It is as if all of the life has gone out of her. And there's not a damn thing anyone can do about it.
As her father stands outside the door, barking at the doctors to leave them both the hell alone and leave Audrey to rest a while, for the first time her eyes snap across to the door. She watches intently as her father comes back into the room, looking visibly shaken. "You're going to get through this," he insists, "You're gonna be just fine. I'll see to that."
Audrey barely hears. She just stares at him.
"You're gonna snap out of this," her father carries on, voice shaking, "Audrey, please.."
He falls into a chair, and bows his head. He doesn't look up for a very long time. When he does, there are tears forming in his eyes. He hasn't felt this way in a long time. Seeing his daughter like this has done something to him. He fears that he may fall apart if she doesn't get help soon. But what if that help does nothing to change things? What if his daughter, his Audrey, is like this forever?
Lifeless. Unable to do anything but sit there and stare at him.
Whatever happened to the little girl he raised? The little girl he loved? Of course he still loves her. But it's never going to be the same again. He can't go on denying this. But--
"Jack."
He looks up at her, alarmed.
"Audrey?" her father stands up abruptly and stares down at his daughter, "Say that again. Did you just say--?"
"Jack," Audrey repeats, sounding more urgent this time.
Her father can't believe his ears. "Hey, someone, anyone, get in here!" he yells to anyone who will listen, and for a moment he leaves his daughter as he rushes off to find help.
Audrey Raines just stares blankly as he turns to leave. Still, maybe she's not done fighting yet.
Maybe there's still hope after all.
