"Emergency numbers are on the fridge-"
"I'm not five, Mom. I know how to dial 9-1-1 and I know your cell."
Lisa sent her son a look and Ben rolled his eyes before asking, "Where are you going, anyway?"
The mother grabbed her purse and enlightened her son, "Matt and I are going to dinner. We'll be back by eleven, eleven-thirty at the latest."
Matt the doctor. Ben could have snorted, he would have if his mother hadn't already kissed his forehead and walked out the front door. The young teen didn't care about Matt, he wanted Dean to come back and make his mom happy again. Sure, his mother wasn't a load of deppression or anything but Ben was positive he'd seen her smile more in the past year than in his whole life.
Ben glanced at the telephone and sighed. Dean still hadn't called. His mom had tried calling several times adn even more after she thought Ben was sleeping but...she wasn't as sneaky as she thought she was.
He'd been tempted to call a couple times himself but figured they would have worked things out by now. Maybe they needed a push in the right direction, though. Ben ran a hand over his face and shook his head, he didn't even know where to find Dean's number-but his mom's cell phone would be a great place to start.
Plopping down on the couch, Ben flipped on the television. He'd only met Matt once when he had picked up Lisa for their first date. He was brown headed with light brown eyes. Honestly, Ben didn't think that badly of him. Matt had a good job, was nice enough, and could tell some good jokes to lighten the tension but he wasn't Dean.
Dean knew everything about Ben and his mom. His job was just as important as a doctor's, heck maybe it was even more important. Dean could fix cars and had even bought Ben a pocketknife as long as he didn't tell his mom...even though when she found it one day she didn't seem as surprised or angry as Ben had originally thought she would be. Ben had a feeling Dean had double-checked with his mom before giving out the gift. But, hey, a pocketknife was still a pocketknife. Dean had been more of a father to him than anyone Ben's mother had dated.
Ben stayed up until ten-fifty before going to his room, shutting off the light, closing the door, and putting the pocketknife Dean gave him under his pillow. He stared at his alarm clock until the digits read: 11:39, which was when the front door opened and he heard his mom walk in and put her bag down. She came in to check on him before leaving to her own room.
Two days later Ben placed a call to Dean.
So I watched the latest episode and as soon as I heard Lisa say 'he's a doctor' I thought "And what does Ben have to say about that?" I think he's a real interesting character and I hope he continues to stay on the show.
