We Don't Know
Todd had continued east in search of new and exciting adventures. He had seen and photographed so much—from eevees at play, to the prehistoric aerodactyl, and even the legendary articuno! But while the adventures were nothing short of amazing, he was always searching for more. He found a quiet spot to lay in wait and watch for wild pokémon. Unfortunately, it was tooquiet. He had seen neither hide nor hair of a single pokémon all day.
Discouraged, Todd dismantled his tripod, rolled up his sleeping bag, and packed them up to leave. There was a pokémon center nearby, and sometimes even tame pokémon had their charm. He adjusted the strap of his camera, and pulled on his packsack.
He was just about to go when glowing rings passed before his eyes. An umbreon! At this point, he had not expected anything common, never mind a rare beauty like eevee's night evolution. He quickly grabbed for his camera, and as he did a second pokémon emerged. An espeon. Neither pokémon paid him any mind. It was possible they hadn't seen him at all.
The espeon nipped playfully at the umbreon's tail and scampered on. The umbreon yipped its dismay and gave chase. Click! Slowly, careful not to disturb the pair, Todd inched after them.
The umbreon tackled the espeon to the ground, and pinned it there. It growled down at the espeon, and the espeon whimpered in reply. They stayed like this for several moments before the espeon craned its neck. It reached up and licked the umbreon's nose. Click!
The umbreon vehemently shook its head and reared off of the espeon. With an indignant huff, it scampered even farther into the grass. The espeon rolled onto its paws and bounded after its companion.
Todd released his camera, letting it hang back about his neck, and made his way after them. He looked left, right, and into the falling darkness, but the pair seemed to have successfully eluded him. He sighed. Even if all he had were two simple shots, they were better than heading to the pokémon center empty-handed. He waded through the grass, and back towards the center.
He continued to peer off into the night, hoping to find another shot before giving up altogether. It wasn't long before he could again see the glow of the umbreon's rings. Curious, he crept closer.
The two had settled down in a flattened patch of grass. They lay curled together on their bellies. The day evolution nuzzled into the umbreon, and rested its chin there on the umbreon's neck. Todd grabbed anew for his camera. Click!
After he had taken the third shot, he gasped and quickly lowered the camera to get a clearer look. The pokémon, both the umbreon and the espeon, glowed.
"Are they... evolving!"
The light emitting from them grew brighter, and brighter, and brighter still! And then it was gone. When his eyes had readjusted to the darkness, neither pokémon had changed. But there, between the umbreon's forepaws, was an egg.
Author's Note
I wouldn't be surprised if someone beat me to this ages ago. If you've seen fanart or fanfiction pre-dating this (November 2008) with the same idea, show me where to find it so I can spread the love~ :3 I probably could have done a better job with this, namely choosing more common pokémon, but I hope you still enjoyed the story. Feedback would be appreciated. Regardless, thank you for reading.
