I was nine years old. The last thing I remember I was in the house with my mom... What the heck just happened? Mom said the house was broken into... But why? We don't have money, or nice clothes or furniture. Who would want anything from us? It was dark, and it was late, midnight, I'm sure, and I would bang on the door, but Mom would never answer, but I could hear something growling, like a dog, inside. But, we don't have pets. Something's in there attacking my parents! I try to unlock the door, I really do, but I can't. I hear the growing noise charging outside. Towards me! All I can do is cry, not even scream. I fell it's prescence right in front of me, and then I hear the gunshots. I close my eyes. I'm sure that I'm dead. No. I'm still shaking. I'm still scared. "Shhh... Hush. Hush, now." I hear a man say. I don't open my eyes as the man cradles me in his arms. I'm sure he's my father. "Daddy?" whimper. "No." The man says. "Where are my parents?" I ask the man as he carries me away from my house, where the dog is in the house. I hope Mom and Dad got out, and the man's taking me to them. "Your parents... Are gone." He says. "When are they coming back?" I ask. "Never. Your parents are... Dead." The man says. "No!" I shriek, starting to cry. "Shhh... Don't cry." He says. "Where are you taking me?" I sob. "Home. Your new home." He says. "My new home?" I ask. "The foster home." The man says. I cry so loud, all the time he carries me. He knocks on the door of what I assume is the foster home. A big woman with red hair opens the door. "Yes, Mr. Grigio?" He asks. "We have another one." He says, handing me to the woman. The woman shakes her head and clucks her tongue. She puts me down, and I run to the man, huggng his legs as tight as I can. "We can't do that, sir. We're full." She says. He curses and hits the side of the house. I whimper and shake. Will this man hurt me? He scoops me up again and carries me away as the woman closes her door. "We'll just have to make due." He mumbles to me. "What's your name, dear?" He asks me. "Nora. Nora Greene." I say. "Well, Nora, welcome." He says as he puts me down on the porch of the biggest house I've ever seen. "Welcome home."
