"Zavala! We can see the lead Cabal cruiser now! Moving to assist friendly on board!" Bill shouted over the alarm klaxons blaring in his cockpit. The team was now on final approach to Earth, below them they could see a bright orange blaze where the City stood. The Traveler loomed in the distance.
"What the hell is that device they've attached to the Traveler?" Dak's voice crackled in his ear.
"We'll have to worry about that later," Kahlee said. "Right now, that Guardian needs our help! Zavala said he's all alone on that ship!"
As Bill readied his ship's weapons, the six-pronged device wrapped around the Traveler's outer shell began to glow a bright orange, and a wave of the same color swept across its surface. In an instant, Bill felt himself grow weak, a brilliant blue flash lit up his cockpit, and he saw a mirror of himself, made of pure Light, leave his body. He instantly became disoriented. Next to his head, Cee began to crackle with electricity, and without a word, clattered to the cockpit floor, motionless. Bill could barely keep his eyes open, let alone maintain control of his ship, but as he fought for consciousness, he saw similar blue flashes emanating from his Fireteam's own cockpits, as well as smaller blue dots lighting up the sky, other Guardian ships engaged in air-to-air dogfights.
He tried to speak, but words failed to leave his lips. With his last bits of strength, he engaged his auto-pilot, and managed to punch up an emergency set of coordinates far away from the City. As darkness closed in around the border of his vision, he knew something terrible had happened.
Only death and ruin awaited Guardians across the solar system.
