End, A "Life" Fanfic

"Crews, just do me one favor," Dani Reese began as they walked to the car.

Charlie Crews was never sure whether he heard the gunshot or Reese's stunned gasp first. He dropped his kiwi and spun around, gun in hand. He saw gunsmoke emanating from an open window, but there was no shooter in sight. He hurriedly grabbed the radio and called for backup and an ambulance.

Blood gushed from the hole in Reese's throat and she gasped for breath. Charlie stuck his thumb in the hole, allowing her short relief from strangulation.

"You're gonna be okay, Reese," Charlie told her. "This is completely fixable."

"No," she rasped.

"Dani, you're gonna be fine!" he insisted.

"This...because of you," she stammered.

"What?"

"Case...your case...I've been looking..."

Charlie's eyes widened. "Why?"

"You...my...partner."

"You-you shouldn't have-" he spluttered. She put a hand on his face, which silenced him.

"Charlie," she whispered, "get them."

He vaguely heard sirens as he nodded.

"Promise?"

"Yes," he whispered.

She began choking no matter how hard Charlie pressed his thumb into her throat. Her eyes froze and her body went limp in his arms. He didn't remember screaming or rocking her back and forth. Bobby Stark had to pull him away from her. He was only marginally aware of the lieutenant asking him what happened. He clearly remembered the coroner covering Dani's face and putting her in the back of an ambulance.

He threw up near the lieutenant's feet. Some of the sick got on her shoes. Shivers ran through his body and thoughts converged randomly in his head. Bobby wrapped him in a blanket and tugged at his shoulders. Numbly, he followed as his former partner guided him away from his new former partner.
