hate.
"Hijikata
san,"
"hmm?"
"I…mm…I want to
know when I am going to get my katana…"
Toshi's
icy glare glazed over a shivering Tetsu, who
could
hardly suppress his shudder.
"Get back to
work." "But…"
"Get back to work!"
"I didn't join Shisengumi just to make you tea!"
"Then LEAVE!"
It was hopeless. The prospect of him getting his own katana seemed bleak, almost incredible, like something that only happened in dreams. He was beginning to resign to his fate. No one could understand Toshi's hesitation. In the past, he would have gladly accepted any member with skill;, like he did with Souji, but this time…His thoughts were closed to discussion, and he didn't intend to share them. Watching from aside, exasperation found its way once again to Souji
"Hijikata
san, why?"
"What?"
"Do you intend
to keep him as a page forever?"
"If so, it's for
his own good."
"His good? It's not fair to him you
know…"
"Do not argue with me on this Souji"
Silence. Once again.
Tension hung amidst the atmosphere. Souji's usually peaceful and kind face abnormally disturbed. His brows furrowed into a tight knot, his clear violet eyes glazed over with rage. Silence hung like death over them. Light patters of the drizzle grew into a downpour; a premonition of an impending danger.
"Tetsu!"
In reply came the shuffle of kimono against kimono Each step heavy as lead, Tetsu stepped forward into the limelight. Hushed silence fell once again over the increasing crowd.
"Yes master Toshi?"
"Take what is
yours and leave. Now!"
"WHAT?"
"Hijikata san…there is no need for this, the boy did no wrong!"
"LEAVE!"
"Hijikata san…"
"NOW!"
"Hijikata san!"
Somewhere in the distance, an owl hooted to announce the arrival of night.
"You've changed... You wish to protect him don't you?", in his voice a new note of cold fury and disappointment.
"I
don't need to explain to you."
"Don't need to
explain! You do wish to protect him! Where does that leave me
then? What am I to you? A mistake never to be committed again! Is
that what I am? A mistake?"
"SOUJI! Shut up and cool down, this has nothing to do with you."
Hijikata turned to leave. Instinctively, Souji lashed out at him.
"Souji!", shouted Hijikata in shock.
"WHY!"
"He's only fifteen! Do you really want him to become like you?"
"I see…that's what happened…Hijikata san grew a heart over the years. Tell me then… Why could you do it to me then? Why didn't you think I am too young? Why did you turn me into a demon as such!"
"I want to abandon my humanity; take up the katana. Make me a demon, just like you. These were your exact words. This is what you wanted! What you asked for!"
"I was nine! NINE! Innocent! Ignorant Impressionable! You should have known better! But you only thought of yourself you selfish bastard! You wanted me! Because I could help you win! That's what I have been to you! A mere tool!"
"Souji…"
Souji dished out knuckle after knuckle, each falling with immense strength on Hijikata's originally handsome face. Rage drove him on like a bull seeing red. He had but one aim : elimination.
A ferocious scramble broke out.
"Okita
sama! Stop!"
"SHUT UP!"
The scuffle grew even fiercer, and no one dared to interfere with this fight between the demons. They lunged at each other as though thirsty for blood; eyes bloodshot, mouths upturned, muscles tensed.
Thud.
Souji delivered a finishing blow and left Hijikata in a crumpled heap. Never had anyone seen Hijikata in a more pathetic state.
"Don't you ever forget the sin you committed."
He turned to leave, allowing the rain to swallow up his trembling body. His silhouette became a mere flicker, which slowly turned in to nothingness. A nothingness called Okita Souji.
