Summary: It has been said that eyes are the window to the soul.
He has these wonderful blue eyes.
I think that's what attracted me originally. I've always had a weakness for blue eyes. And his were as clear as the sea on a summer's day. Not that I've seen that, but I've heard about it from him repeatedly – I can almost picture the beaches at Crabapple Cove, Maine.
When I first met him in Korea, the first thing I noticed was his eyes. They always sparkled with delight, even when we were in the OR he managed to cheer me up just by looking at me. There was always a sort of madness behind them but he never let it come out – he was too strong for that.
He had a devious quality about him – but you had to know just where to look. When he was devious his eyes were on the verge of green. But being Hawk, he never wanted to co-ordinate with out uniforms. When he was plotting his eyes filled with laughter and he had a twinkle in them. The mischievous look on his face seemed to give it away though.
But when people weren't looking they changed. No longer the beautiful blue, they were more a deep, murky blue, filled with sorrow and pain for each and every soldier that came in here. He only ever let me see him like that; I was the only one he trusted with his sadness. But his eyes were still beautiful.
I got a letter from him the other day, even though I haven't seen him in a while. And just through his words I knew what his eyes looked like. He was hurting, and I was still the only one he ever let know.
He really does have beautiful eyes. Eyes that held too much for a man who didn't want to let others see, eyes that told his emotions to the world.
The next time I saw him there was something else in those eyes I loved so much.
It had gotten to him before I could.
He wasn't really him after that, but I loved him just the same. Those eyes got to me again. He was scared and frightened like a child, seemingly lost in his own head. He wouldn't admit it, but I knew. I always had done.
Korea had finally caught up with him, and he was too weak to do anything about it. The dark blue depths showed defeat and resignation to his final destiny. And I couldn't do anything about it, I could only sit and watch until he was taken over completely but his memories.
Hawkeye Pierce was gone, and in his place was a different man entirely.
But with the same wonderful blue eyes.
