Tonks was in the sitting room, still awake though it was well into the night. She was just convincing herself to go to bed when she heard a knock on the front door. By force of habit, she grabbed her wand before making her way to see who was there.
She unlocked the door and opened it with her wand raised. Standing in front of her was her husband, Remus Lupin.
She was silent for a moment before she thought to verify his identity. "What did you say when you asked me to marry you?" She pulled the question out of nowhere.
"I said that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you, however long that may be." His eyes showed how truly sorry he was. He had left in the middle of the night, leaving no note or explanation of any kind. "I meant it, Dora, and I'd love another chance to do that."
She lowered her wand and stepped aside, closing the door behind him. The fact the she was upset didn't mean she would get both of them killed by letting her guard down. She bolted the door and walked over to the couch where he had sat down.
"I was just gonna turn in.." She avoided his eyes.
"Do you want me to stay out here?" He asked gently. He was so sweet, how could she reject him? She had no choice.
"That would probably be best," She said quietly. She then stood up and walked to the bedroom.
She tried to fall asleep alone for a few minutes. She had been without Remus for entirely too long, and she couldn't stand him being so close but not being with her.
"Remus?" She called softly, knowing his heightened sense of hearing would pick it up.
A few moments he later, she heard the door open and close. Remus climbed in bed beside her and she curled up to him. She started crying and he held her. He held her until she stopped crying and fell asleep.
In the morning, he would let her pretend it didn't happen. He would let her be mad at him and freeze him out. She had needed him, so he was there. He would never hold that against her.
