Midnighters Book 2 aprox chapter 33, if Rex hadn't escaped.
He wasn't getting any closer.
We readied ourselves for another jump, I drew the light on the hordes of slithers and darklings, but got only the slowest.
Suddenly, a huge column of slithers pulled away from the group and made a giant curtain.
"What are they doing?" Jonathon wondered aloud. The slithers ducked below us , creating a living carpet.
We were starting to descend. Crap.
I played the light across the seething mass. The slithers moved like a flock of birds, dodging the blinding white light, as if they knew where I was going to move it next. I directed the light to where I thought we would land, the slithers dodged away even before I moved. Something was very wrong here.
We were descending, and I thought the slithers couldn't stop us. I was wrong. The edges flew up, surrounding us like a tornado, the ground where the flashlight hit was the eye of the storm. But in this tornado, the rules were a little shaky. The slithers around us drew in for an attack, but I couldn't direct the light on them, for then our only safe spot we be swarmed by slithers, but if I didn't, we would die anyway. And all the while, the darklings were getting away with Rex
I made my decision. I splashed the light across the hundreds of slithers around us, cutting easily through their ranks. Screams filled the air, but I couldn't get all of them. A jarring pain struck my back, and another on my elbow. I was surprised more didn't hit.
"Use the flare!"
"Oh right." I pulled explosiveness from my pocket, and tore it in half, crying its name. The air around us exploded with light, screams filling the air.
"Jeez. That sounds intense."
"Very."
