UNDERSTANDING

The grass was soft and green, glistening in the sunlight. It was a warm morning at the very end of June, the graveyard surprisingly quiet for a Saturday. Alexis Castle made her way quietly towards the simple, yet beautiful headstone.

She sat down on the grass slowly, putting a dozen freshly picked daisies next to the already dried bouquet of flowers.

"Hi, Daddy," – she whispered, running her fingers gently over the engravings in the slate.

She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. She felt no urge to cry; she cried when she was told what happened, cried herself to sleep that whole first week after the explosion, cried during the ceremony, cried during Kate's ceremony. She was all out of tears.

"I finally started going to classes again. I know you would hate how much I missed. Grandma is…well, she's being herself. Finally," – she said with a slight smirk.

Sitting quietly for a few moments, Alexis contemplated her next words.

"I still haven't forgiven you for what you did," –the words tumbled out of her mouth, leaving bad taste in their wake. "It'll take some time. I just – I hope one day I find someone who will make me understand why you did what you did."

She smiled wistfully and stood up slowly, touching the headstone one last time.

"I miss you, Daddy," – she whispered, biting her lip before turning around and leaving.
