So Close... Yet So Far

Me:I feel so saaaaaaaad for Halt in this fanfic. It's based on the time between the second and third books, just like alot of the 'poor Halt' fanfics.

Halt: Don't feel sorry for me or I'll put an arrow through you!

Me:Awwwww, poor Halt. His misery has turned to anger. Don't worry Halt, I feel sorry for u.

Halt:I'm warning you, sympathy won't help you.

Me: Halt's so CUTE when he's gonna kill me.

Will: Halt! What's going on here?

Halt: Shoot him! NOW!

Me: You wouldn't dare Halty-Walty!

Halt: FIRE!!!!

Me: X-X

(Sorry guys that dragged on a bit. But it's fun writing conversations like that so if you hate it just skip to the story. And this PC doesn't have spelling check so sorry for mistakes. L8D=Elvis. I know I'm weird.)

Tears hit the ground in front of the massive oak's roots. The man in a grey-green cloak who was leaning on the tree made no attempt to brush them away.

"Will... I couldn't protect you. I left you to be a slave. It's all my fault!" Halt's words faded away into a racking sob.

"Halt..." A tender hand was laid on the grizzled ranger's shoulder. "It wasn't your fault, he may be an apprentice but he's still a ranger. He needs to face his share of danger."

"No, Crowley, I could've stopped those damned Skandians. If I had just arrived a few moments earlier..." Halt's voice was choked with sobs.

"Halt, you couldn't have arrived any sooner, noone could've travelled faster!"

No, thought Halt, Will and Tug could've travelled faster, that horse was like lightning! And as soon as he thought it the tears ran even more freely down his face. (A/N Well don't think it then, genius. Nah, Halt's smart, he's just overcome with grief. And I suppose it just popped into his mind. Sorry I just want to make this longer. I'll shut up now.)"Look, Crowley, could you please just leave me alone?" Halt asked tears still pouring down his face "I don't mean to be offensive, it's just..."

"I know Halt but it wasn't your fau...."

Halt said nothing but flailed a hand roughly to his side, gesturing for Crowley to leave. Crowley decided there was no progress to be made staying there so silently slipped away. Halt sighed and watched a nearby leaf gently to the forest floor. He made a snatch at it, planning to take his anger and misery out on it by tearing it to many wrinkled, shriveled pieces. But the leaf was caught by a breeze and drifted just out of reach. Halt stared at it through tear-blurred eyes. Just like him and Will. Just as he thinks he's almost got him back he gets taken away. So close... yet so far.
