Uptown girl

I do not own Newsies in any way. Inspired by Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl".

Every day, Marie would walk around Central Park with her nanny.

And every time, the same newsboy would walk up to them.

It had happened every day for 7 years.

"Race, would youse give it up?" Kid Blink asked.

"No. I'm wearin' her down. She's jist turned 14 today", Racetrack said. Racetrack rushed down to the flower girl and bought a fresh cut rose. He hurried to Central Park to find one of Marie's suitors put a pearl necklace around her neck. Race threw the rose to the ground.

"Race!" she yelled. She ran up to him. "What's wrong?" she asked him.

"Nothin'", he spat and walked off.

She looked down and saw the rose. She picked it up and watched as two petals fell to the ground. Her eyes filled with tears as she lifted the rose to her nose.

It smelled fresh, with a hint of cigar smoke.

The next day, she grabbed an old pair of pants and a loose shirt.

She threw a newsboy cap on and climbed out her window and down the fire escape. She made her way out of Upper Manhattan down to newsie square. She spotted Racetrack talking with a boy dressed like a cowboy and another with an eye-patch. She strolled up to them and said, "How's it rollin'?"

The three looked at her.

Race knew those big blue eyes anywhere.

Race grabbed her face and asked, "Marie? What da hell are youse doin' here?"

"I had to see after the way you acted yesterday", she said. Marie's eyes focused on Race's lips. She reached up and set her hand on Race's cheek. She smiled when she felt the light stubble on his jaw line. She leaned forward and kissed him.

Race knocked her newsboy cap off and buried his hands in her sandy brown hair. He shifted to where she was leaning up against the statue.

The two other newsboys just stood and watched as Marie buried her hands in Race's hair. The other newsboys started to gather around and yell things out to the new couple.

Marie pulled away and smiled.

Race placed one more kiss on her lips.

"Wow", was all Jack could say.

"Hot blooded, much?" Race asked.

"What about you?" she asked, out of breath.

"Youse know us Italians. Passionate'n all", he said.

Marie laughed. "Wanna be my downtown guy?" she asked, putting her arms around his neck.

"Only if you're my uptown girl", Racetrack said smiling.

"Deal", she said.
