He has no idea what true fear is as he first steps into the world. The jitters of a neophyte would hardly compare to the ordeals which lie ahead. He walks in the heavy wooden doors bearing scars of the past, but quietly tucks them away behind blue suits and gold badges.
"It is an honor for me to be in your noble presence…"
In finding a new place of his own, he struggles, he seeks, and he succeeds. With new confidence, he strives to help, to heal, to hold together the lives of those he cherishes. He shrugs off heavy blows, never quite backing down in the bitter end, even when faced by the most ruthless foes.
"You're lying, damn it, and I can prove it!"
As the years pass, he gains momentum in the world. More turn to recognize him, to trust him even with their lives. He is Icarus, and the sun rests within sight. He gets his first taste of true fear, but relentlessly fights on, spurred by it.
"I find the defendant, Matt Engarde…GUILTY."
However, unlike others before him he is untainted by success. It fails to tarnish his unswerving loyalty to both his clients and himself.
"There's nothing more I can teach you, Phoenix."
But as Murphy's Law proves itself once again, he gets a bigger dose of fear than he expects. One by one the feathers melt away as the sun falls away from him…or is he the one falling away from it?
He sheds no tears, though, as he falls through the reality of true fear, the division between him and all he has ever worked for, all that he has ever lived for.
"The only time a lawyer can cry is when it's all over."
And it isn't.
