Originally written for the contest on Holly Black's livejournal, so there was a limited word count. I definitely didn't win, but I didn't think it was that bad, thus I decided to post it. I mostly wanted to keep them in character, but there is an attempt at some kind of humor.
Kaye walked quickly down the stone hallway. After hearing the latest bit of gossip, she wanted to talk to Roiben and find out if it was true. She found it difficult to believe that two humans had just asked to be brought down into the Unseelie Court. She wondered if they realized what they were getting themselves into.
She spotted Roiben, though he had his back to her as he talked with one of his knights. Upon hearing the sound of her footsteps he looked up and, dismissing the knight, turned to face her.
"You've heard of our latest guests?" he questioned.
"You mean prisoners," she said, only half joking.
He frowned slightly, but chose not to offer any sort of response. Instead he motioned for her to walk beside him as he continued down the hall.
"You were not expecting any friends to come seeking your company, I'm sure," he said, lightening the tone of the conversation.
She smirked. "Of course not." She glanced up at him before continuing. "What do you think they're doing here?"
He shrugged and ran his long fingers through his hair. "It was foolish for them to come here, whatever the reason."
"Even if they have a knight to fight for them," she said playfully.
"Well, let us hope that one of my knights has not made such a foolish mistake as I, giving out their name to clever human girls," he returned, flashing her one of the smiles meant only for her.
Kaye ran her hand over the green skin of her arm, pausing before asking what was really bothering her. "They won't get hurt, will they?"
"You know I cannot promise you that," he said softly.
The humans shouldn't really be a concern to Kaye, but she still felt connected to them in a way, having lived as one of them for so long.
"I would appreciate your opinion when we see them," he said. "It isn't often we get these sort of visitors."
She nodded and let out a soft sigh.
"Come, let us go see what exactly is going on, before we make too many assumptions of their intentions," he said as they approached the entryway.
Upon entering the hall, Roiben took his place on the throne of braided birch. Kaye lingered to the side, watching as the girl chained on the floor started to wake up.
She looked up at Roiben just as he leaned over and beckoned to her. She moved to stand beside him and regarded the pair on the floor, aware that the girl was staring at her intently. Kaye leaned over to speak softly to Roiben, so that only he could hear.
"At least she was kind enough to keep her friend with her, and not let him end up the plaything of a twisted knight. Maybe she'll have better luck than I did, simply for being a better friend."
His lips twisted into what might have been a smile.
