Hero
Nobody expected it to be an easy day for Kakashi, because no child could ever cope well on the day of their father's funeral.
Not many show for the event, but the few that do watch sympathetically as the White Fang's child makes his way slowly forwards through the pouring rain with the first white chrysanthemum. When he reaches the front he stops and stares, and they expect the orphaned 8-year-old is going to say a few words.
They didn't think it would be easy, and they had been prepared for some sort of breakdown, but not what actually happened.
Because Kakashi does say a few words, but they're spoken too quietly for anyone to hear, but it doesn't matter, because he repeats them – louder and again and again and again until he's screaming 'I hate you'.
He throws the flower to the floor and takes to the rooftops; tears mixing with the raindrops trickling down his cheeks.
He's sobbing on his knees before the memorial stone when he's found, and he acknowledges the man's presence with a choked gasp of "His name should be on here"
As his Sensei steps forwards to embrace him he screeches it again, desperate to let him know that his father is a hero – his hero - whether anyone else thinks so or not.
